Job Description

Company: Our client owns and operates utility-scale battery energy storage systems across Australia, developing projects end-to-end using in-house capability, from origination through development to construction, energisation, and operation. This is a fast-growing company with experienced individuals who share a passion for enabling the energy transition through BESS in leading the acceleration of the energy transition through utility-scale storage, and is targeting significant growth over the coming years. Role: In preparation for the energisation of its first two projects, the business is creating a new role of Head of Operations. Reporting directly to the CEO, the purpose of this function will be to oversee asset management, and operations and maintenance, for the companies growing portfolio of operating BESS. This includes responsibility for ensuring the operational, financial, and contractual success of the assets while aligning with the shareholders’ strategic objectives. Responsibilities: Asset Management Operational performance: Tracking the performance of each BESS ensuring it operates at peak efficiency. Applying appropriate actions to optimise the asset or correct any underperformance. Operational reporting: Using data from the systems, producing timely reports on availability, downtime, and system efficiency. Optimiser management: Supporting with the selection of optimisers to best support the company’s strategy and objectives, and carrying out all relevant onboarding and integration for each BESS. Revenue management: Maximise financial returns from each BESS. Closely monitoring revenues and network charges, reviewing trading performance, and ensuring optimisers are trading the asset within the company’s trading protocol and any contractual boundaries agreed with offtakers. Handling all invoicing and contractual obligations under any offtake contracts. Revenue reporting: Timely reporting of revenue and costs for each asset. Producing site benchmarking and market analysis where applicable. Software selection: Leading the selection and implementation of asset monitoring software to support with the above activities. Maintain site information and contracts: This includes site contracts, warranties, SLDs and site setup. Operations & Maintenance General oversight: Oversee day-to-day operations of each BESS. Monitoring system performance data to identify potential failures, responding to any issues that arise, and ensuring the system meets performance standards. Preventive Maintenance: Working with OEMs and external O&M support to plan and implement preventive maintenance schedules to reduce the likelihood of unexpected breakdowns. This includes routine inspections, software updates, cleaning, and hardware checks to ensure all components are functioning properly. Troubleshooting & Repair: In case of system failures, coordinate troubleshooting and repairs. Work with technicians and engineers to quickly resolve issues and minimise system downtime. Equipment Management: Manage the spare parts inventory, ensuring critical components are available for quick replacement. Oversee any necessary upgrades or retrofitting of outdated technology to extend the asset’s lifespan. Site Security: Ensure the site of each BESS is secure at all times this includes locks and CCTV. Site access procedure in place. Site Commissioning: Lead on site commissioning working with ICP, EMS supplier and route to market provider. Requirements: Professional qualifications in engineering, project management, or finance fields. 5+ years’ experience and proven track record in asset management of BESS and/or other renewables. Ability to build strong relationships with key counterparties including potential offtakers, as well as trust with senior management and the Board. Strong analytic skills in compiling and interpreting complex operational data, distilling key information for senior management and the Board. Strong ‘can-do’ attitude and hands-on approach, managing multiple projects in parallel. Exceptional communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to operate well under pressure in a lean organisation with changing priorities.
