Purpose Individually constituted Medical Panels provide procedurally fair, timely opinions and reasons in relation to questions referred pursuant to Victorian workers' compensation legislation and the Wrongs Act 1958 (Vic). The Senior Legal Advisor supports Medical Panels to be independent, fair and timely when answering medical questions relating to workers' compensation and personal injury law. They provide legal and policy advice to the Convenor and individual Medical Panels. Key Responsibilities Key accountabilities include but are not limited to: Providing expert legal and policy advice to the Convenor and individual Medical Panels Reviewing Medical Panel opinions, determinations and reasons for compliance with law Providing effective and genuine leadership through effective coaching and mentoring of Legal Advisors, aligning with the organisational values and goals Identifying emerging policy issues potentially affecting Medical Panels and developing and recommending appropriate responses Liaising with the legal profession on matters relating to Medical Panel process and outcomes Making appropriate recommendations with respect to progressing referrals Please ensure you take a look at the Position Description via WorkSafe Careers for additional information on accountabilities for this role. About You You're an experienced Legal Advisor who wants to make a difference. You have demonstrated ability to work in a small team within a sensitive environment and subject to close public scrutiny. You possess excellent communication skills both written and oral and have an ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of stakeholders. You will also have: Substantial experience as a legal practitioner working within the WorkCover scheme and/or public law decision-making and dispute resolution, particularly regarding the Accident Compensation Act 1985, the Workplace Injury Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 2013 and Wrongs Act 1958 Experience managing legal practitioners or other high performing teams with accountability for service delivery High level strategic, analytical and critical decision-making capabilities that include high-level judgement in identifying and managing the resolution of issues of strategic impact and importance Proven ability to provide strategic advice, problem solving and issues management for stakeholders in relation to complex and potentially controversial matters Qualifications Professional legal qualifications with admission to practice as a Barrister or Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Victoria and capacity to hold a full practicing certificate Minimum of 7 years post admission experience Working with Us At WorkSafe, we aspire for every employee to feel connected, safe and valued in their team, for teams to feel valued in the workplace, and for WorkSafe to be valued in the community.
