Job Description

At the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI), we are committed to achieving innovative, ground-breaking health and medical research that fundamentally improves the quality of life for all people. The Registry of Senior Australians Research Centre (ROSA Research Centre), established in 2017, was designed to monitor the health, service utilisation, medication use, mortality, and other health-specific outcomes of people receiving aged care services. The ROSA Research Centre’s efficient model leverages existing information, bringing together diverse datasets collected by different organisations throughout the country, to provide us with a whole picture of the ageing pathway. The ROSA Research Centre produces evidence to guide decision-making for quality, coordinated, efficient, innovative, and age-friendly services and practices. A fantastic opportunity is now available for an experienced Statistician to join the ROSA Research Centre with a focus on conducting high-quality research in the focus area of aged care and health care for older people. In this role, you will use analytical/statistical methodologies to produce the evidence necessary for practice and policy recommendations which will improve the consistency and quality of care provided to older Australians receiving aged care services. Specifically, this position will work to build evidence of care quality delivered to older people accessing home care and contribute to other ROSA projects. This position will work independently and also with ROSA’s lead researchers and analytical team. About the role Key responsibilities include: Conduct high-quality research with a focus on aged care and health services for older people accessing aged care, including planning, execution, statistical analyses, report writing, and publication. Conduct a project within ROSA to examine the care quality delivered to older people accessing home care, and other projects to meet the goals of ROSA. Conduct complex analyses of large datasets (>1 million individuals) contained within ROSA, including aged care data, Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme data, Medicare Benefits Schedule data, hospitalisation records, and Department of Social Services Data On Multiple Individual Occurrences (DOMINO) data. Co-ordinate input on projects from lived experience contributors (consumers) and stakeholders. Contribute and advise in study design. This includes development of study protocols, analytical plans, and sample size calculations. Undertake and coordinate high-level statistical analyses, including complex multivariable modelling and survival analysis. Knowledge of sophisticated techniques to handle missing data, confounding adjustment, and other observational data features are highly desirable. Undertake studies regarding quality and safety monitoring, variation in care quality, and value-based care. Collaborate with the analytical team on data management, linkage efforts, and quality control processes when necessary for ROSA’s implementation, performance enhancement, and other areas as needed. Prepare methods and analysis results for papers to be published in peer-reviewed journals. About You The successful candidate will possess the following key attributes: Degree qualification in a relevant field with extensive relevant experience. Masters or PhD in Statistics, Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Biomedical Informatics, Bioinformatics, Health Services Research, Ageing, Geriatric/Gerontology, Public Health, Medicine, or related field highly desirable. Excellent proficiency working with at least one software package (i.e., Stata, SAS, or R). Three years’ experience working with large datasets independently. Preferable experience working with aged care and/or health service data. Experience working with observational data, multivariable modelling, confounding/interaction issues, survival analysis, and data visualisation. Knowledge of the aged care and health care systems in Australia (desirable). Demonstrated experience in providing high-level support to research projects. Special Requirements Some out-of-hours work may be required. Everything we do is underpinned by our core values, and our institute is dedicated to growing a culture that pursues, enables, and demands research excellence. We are proud of the work we do and work hard as a team to make a positive difference in the community.
