    The Life Scientist (Cytology) is responsible for undertaking laboratory-based scientific activities involving the examination, analysis and study of biological materials, cells and microorganisms.

    The position involves conducting scientific observations, measurements and laboratory investigations; preparing and examining biological samples; analysing and recording scientific findings; operating and maintaining laboratory equipment; and contributing to quality assurance and the development and improvement of laboratory procedures.

    The role requires the application of knowledge in, biological sciences and laboratory science to support scientific investigations and the accurate and reliable analysis of biological samples.

    The position works under the direction of senior scientific personnel and is required to perform duties in accordance with established scientific methodologies, laboratory procedures, quality standards, workplace health and safety requirements and applicable regulatory requirements.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    The Life Scientist (Cytology) will undertake the following duties:

    A. Scientific Laboratory Investigations

    • Conduct routine laboratory investigations involving biological specimens.

    • Perform scientific observations, measurements and laboratory procedures in accordance with established methodologies.

    • Apply knowledge of biological sciences to laboratory investigations and scientific activities.

    • Examine biological samples using appropriate laboratory and microscopy techniques.

    • Observe and document the physical and biological characteristics of samples and specimens.

    • Identify variations, abnormalities or findings requiring further scientific examination or review.

    • Assist senior scientific personnel with scientific investigations and laboratory projects.

    • Apply scientific principles and established procedures to support accurate and reliable laboratory outcomes.

    B. Sample Collection, Preparation and Examination

    • Receive, identify and prepare biological samples and specimens for scientific examination.

    • Prepare samples using appropriate laboratory techniques, including preparation, separation, processing and other procedures relevant to the investigation.

    • Prepare cell samples and specimens for microscopic examination.

    • Conduct microscopic examination and document observations and findings accurately.

    • Maintain appropriate sample identification, storage and tracking procedures.

    • Ensure samples are handled in accordance with laboratory procedures and safety requirements.

    • Safely dispose of biological and laboratory waste in accordance with applicable procedures.

    C. Scientific Testing and Analysis

    • Perform routine laboratory testing and scientific procedures using established methodologies.

    • Conduct observations and measurements and accurately record scientific results.

    • Analyse laboratory data and scientific findings to identify abnormalities or inconsistencies.

    • Review experimental and laboratory results and identify matters requiring further investigation.

    • Assist with the interpretation and evaluation of scientific findings under the direction of senior scientific personnel.

    • Prepare accurate records, summaries and reports relating to laboratory investigations and scientific findings.

    • Maintain the accuracy, integrity and confidentiality of scientific data and laboratory records.

    D. Microscopy and Cellular Analysis

    • Prepare and examine cell and biological samples using microscopy techniques.

    • Conduct systematic microscopic observation of biological structures and cellular characteristics.

    • Record observations and scientific findings arising from microscopic examinations.

    • Identify cellular or biological characteristics requiring further investigation.

    • Assist senior scientific personnel with the review and evaluation of microscopic findings.

    • Maintain appropriate records of microscopic examinations and related laboratory activities.

    E. Research and Development

    • Assist with scientific research projects and laboratory investigations aimed at improving laboratory methodologies and processes.

    • Participate in experiments, trials, observations and measurements under appropriate scientific supervision.

    • Assist in evaluating new laboratory techniques, scientific methodologies and equipment.

    • Contribute to the development, validation and improvement of laboratory procedures.

    • Research relevant scientific information and developments relating to cytology, laboratory science and biological sciences.

    • Assist with the implementation of improved scientific techniques and laboratory processes.

    • Record and analyse research findings and assist with the preparation of scientific reports, summaries and documentation.

    F. Laboratory Equipment and Instrumentation

    • Set up and operate laboratory equipment and scientific instruments required for laboratory investigations.

    • Test, adjust and calibrate laboratory equipment in accordance with established procedures.

    • Operate equipment such as centrifuges, microscopes, pH meters, titration equipment and other laboratory instruments relevant to the position.

    • Conduct routine equipment checks and maintenance within the employee's training and competency.

    • Identify equipment faults or irregularities and report them to the supervising scientist.

    • Maintain appropriate equipment records, calibration records and maintenance documentation.

    • Ensure laboratory equipment is used safely and appropriately.

    G. Quality Control and Quality Assurance

    • Participate in quality control and quality assurance activities relating to laboratory procedures and scientific testing.

    • Follow standardised laboratory protocols to ensure consistency, reliability and accuracy of scientific results.

    • Conduct routine quality checks, calibrations and validation activities.

    • Identify errors, inconsistencies or quality issues and report them to senior scientific personnel.

    • Assist with corrective and preventative actions where required.

    • Maintain accurate quality control records and documentation.

    • Comply with relevant laboratory quality systems, accreditation requirements and organisational procedures.

    • Contribute to continuous improvement of laboratory processes and scientific practices.

    H. Scientific Data and Reporting

    • Accurately record laboratory observations, measurements, experimental results and scientific findings.

    • Enter and maintain scientific and laboratory information in relevant information systems.

    • Analyse and review laboratory data in accordance with established procedures.

    • Prepare laboratory reports, summaries, reviews and other scientific documentation.

    • Assist with the preparation of documentation required for quality reviews, accreditation, research projects and laboratory improvement activities.

    • Maintain confidentiality and integrity of scientific and laboratory information.

    I. Scientific Research and Professional Development

    • Keep up to date with developments in cytology, laboratory techniques and scientific technology.

    • Review relevant scientific literature and technical information.

    • Participate in training, continuing professional development and competency assessments.

    • Develop and maintain technical knowledge and competency in laboratory methodologies and scientific equipment.

    • Identify opportunities to improve the efficiency, reliability and quality of laboratory operations.

    J. Collaboration and Communication

    • Work collaboratively with supervising scientists, pathologists, laboratory staff and other relevant personnel.

    • Communicate laboratory observations, scientific findings and technical information accurately.

    • Escalate significant scientific, technical or quality issues to the appropriate senior scientific personnel.

    • Assist colleagues with laboratory procedures and scientific activities as required.

    • Provide guidance and practical assistance to junior laboratory staff and interns within the employee's level of competence.

    • Participate in relevant departmental meetings and scientific discussions.

    K. Laboratory Safety and Compliance

    • Maintain a safe, clean and organised laboratory environment.

    • Follow all laboratory health and safety policies and procedures.

    • Handle biological samples, laboratory materials, chemicals and equipment safely.

    • Use appropriate personal protective equipment.

    • Follow procedures for the safe storage, handling and disposal of laboratory materials and waste.

    • Report hazards, incidents, equipment faults and safety concerns promptly.

    • Comply with applicable regulatory, accreditation and organisational requirements.

    L. Inventory and Laboratory Resources

    • Monitor laboratory supplies, reagents and other scientific materials.
