  • Software Engineer - AI Venturing - x15ventures (Senior/ Staff or Principal)
Ship AI-powered products across a portfolio of ventures.
    A bit about us
x15ventures is CommBank's venture-building arm. Our AI Venturing team brings product judgement and deep engineering to focused missions across the portfolio, turning hard venture problems and emerging AI capabilities into products people use.
One mission might be to build an AI-native customer operations capability that adapts to different venture contexts and requirements, then scales across the portfolio. The next might redesign an operational workflow around intelligent automation, or ship an agentic feature that materially changes how customers use a venture's product. You'll adapt quickly to different products, codebases, technology stacks and commercial contexts.
This is product engineering with unusual scope. You'll help identify which problems matter, own the journey from discovery to production, and stay accountable for measuring and improving real-world outcomes.
Reporting to the Chief Venturing Officer, you'll work with venture and x15 leaders to identify where strong product engineering and emerging AI capabilities can create the most value.
What you'll do Own the outcome, end to end. Take ambiguous customer and venture problems through discovery, prototyping, production, measurement and iteration. Take on focused missions across the portfolio. Move between ventures at different stages of maturity, adapting to each context while delivering in close collaboration with the venture - some will advance a venture's critical path; others will explore what could shape its future. Extend x15's AI-native engineering capability. Use coding agents and AI-enabled workflows to improve development speed, testing, iteration and software quality; turn what works into repeatable practices that strengthen the portfolio and can inform how x15 and CommBank engineers build with AI. Build AI products that hold up in the real world. Design, evaluate and operate systems using the right mix of models, agents, tools and deterministic software. Make explicit trade-offs across accuracy, latency, cost, reliability, security and control. Make modern AI work in a high-trust environment. Design for sensitive data, existing platforms and complex integrations, with security, privacy, testing, observability and appropriate controls built in from the outset. Turn experimentation into evidence. Work with product, design, venture leaders and customers to test assumptions, evaluate outcomes and decide what warrants further investment. Build shared product and platform foundations where they create real leverage. Develop reusable AI services, integration patterns and architecture that help multiple ventures move faster or operate more safely, without forcing reuse where venture needs differ.
You might thrive here if you Have repeatedly shipped significant software products and can explain your personal technical, product and delivery contribution. Can work hands-on across the full stack and become effective quickly in unfamiliar products, codebases and technology stacks. Show strong product judgement. You find the underlying problem, challenge assumptions and make sensible trade-offs between customer value, commercial value, complexity and speed. Use AI-assisted development as a core part of your engineering practice, and understand how to build and evaluate AI-powered systems without being tied to a particular framework. Know the difference between a clever prototype and a dependable product. You use AI where it creates measurable value and choose a simpler or deterministic approach when it is better. Navigate security, privacy, risk, legal, platform and organisational constraints pragmatically, working with specialists to resolve issues and keep delivery moving. Hold strong technical opinions loosely. You explain trade-offs, challenge approaches constructively and change your mind when the evidence warrants it. Adapt across ventures, domains and technical environments while carrying useful lessons and capabilities into the next mission.
We'll hire at the level that matches demonstrated experience, scope and impact. Senior engineers independently own complex product builds end to end. Staff engineers lead technically ambiguous initiatives and create leverage across teams and ventures. Principal engineers shape portfolio-level technical direction and tackle difficult cross-venture engineering problems. Every level stays hands-on and close to the code.
Experience we'd value We're looking for exceptional product engineers first. Depth in one or more of these areas will help you contribute quickly: Building and evaluating AI-powered applications using models, tool use, retrieval, agentic workflows and appropriate evaluation techniques. Designing and operating cloud-native applications, APIs and integration-heavy systems. Building secure, high-trust products in financial services, fintech, healthtech or other regulated environments. Working in startups, venture studios or product teams where rapid experimentation and production delivery go hand in hand.
Why x15? The difference is the combination: frontier AI work, focused venture missions and a path to production, backed by CommBank's reach and real-world complexity.
You'll have direct access to venture and x15 leaders, and enough proximity to the decisions for your technical judgement to materially influence what progresses and how it is built.
We value curiosity, craft, pace and good judgement. We try things, challenge each other without the theatre and take responsibility for software that works.
If you're a hands-on product engineer who wants to work at the edge of AI, move across ambitious ventures and turn difficult problems into reliable products, we'd like to hear from you. If you're already part of the Commonwealth Bank Group (including Bankwest, x15ventures), you'll need to apply through Sidekick to submit a valid application. • We're building Unloan through smarter, AI-powered software and automation. You have strong TypeScript, full-stack and Linux skills with end-to-end ownership.Together we solve complex problems and make engineering faster, safer and smarter. Do work that matters:
As a Senior Software Engineer in Unloan's Platform Team , you'll be a software engineer first, designing, building and owning production software end to end. You'll work across the full stack, building applications, APIs, integrations and automation using technologies such as TypeScript, Node.js and Python, while taking what you build all the way through testing, deployment and production support. You'll solve complex engineering problems, integrate distributed systems and use AI-assisted development to create smarter, more automated ways of working. Alongside application engineering, you'll also support the platform services your software depends on, giving you exposure across cloud, containers, Linux and modern delivery tooling.
What makes this role exciting is the breadth of problems you'll get to solve. You might build an AI-powered workflow one day, integrate engineering and security systems the next, then dive into a production issue across application code, APIs or Linux-based platform services. You'll help modernise CI/CD, automate operational processes and improve the reliability and security of the engineering environment, with Azure, GitHub Actions, Terraform or Bicep, containers and observability forming part of the wider landscape.
It's an opportunity to own software from idea through to production, while developing the platform capabilities that help Unloan's engineers build, release and operate software faster and more safely.
    See yourself in our team:
Unloan is a fully digital home loan platform backed by CBA. We believe operational problems are engineering problems waiting to be solved. Our Platform team is a small group of senior engineers with the autonomy to find those problems and fix them properly, whether that means writing application code, integrating APIs, debugging infrastructure, improving security or replacing a manual banking process with reliable automation.
We're also AI-native in how we engineer. We don't just use AI to write code, review changes and solve problems faster, we build agents and automated workflows ourselves. Curiosity and experimentation are expected, as is the ability to dive into unfamiliar systems, understand how they really work and challenge existing assumptions. You'll help us push what's possible within a banking control environment, building software that makes engineering safer, faster and increasingly autonomous.
We're interested in hearing from people who:
Build production software using TypeScript (essential) and or Nodejs, Python, or Go. Have strong engineering background and remain hands-on with production code. Are a full-stack engineer who can work across front-end, back-end, APIs, services and platform integrations.Take full-cycle, end-to-end ownership, from design and development through deployment, production support and continuous improvement.Bring strong Linux experience, including troubleshooting applications, services and production environments.Use AI-assisted development confidently and can build, review, test and safely productionise AI-powered agents and workflows. Can connect complex systems using APIs, events, queues and distributed integration patterns.Excel at debugging complex production issues across application, network and platform layers, while automating repetitive operational work.Bring experience across technologies (but not limited too) such as Azure, GitHub Actions, containers, Terraform/Bicep, observability, networking and security automation.
