Job Description

Who we are The Agvet Chemicals, Fisheries, Forestry Division develops and implements policies that support continual improvement and innovation. The division engages with a wide range of stakeholders throughout Australia and internationally. The division delivers strategic policy advice and reform, delivers grants and industry assistance programs, undertakes legislative reform and plays a leading role in international negotiations. The new Strategic Policy Branch within the Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Policy Group will be responsible for providing a dedicated strategic policy function to the department, building on existing policy work, exploring cross-cutting policy challenges, and working on high-profile, high-intensity projects. The Branch will also be responsible for uplifting the strategic policy capability across the department through co-ordinated training and development opportunities. This is a high-profile, fast-paced, multi-dimensional strategic policy role. We are a small collaborative branch that values critical and creative thinking, open and respectful contestability of ideas and approaches, and individual expertise/experience when solving complex and wicked policy problems. The Job We are looking for experienced, high-performing individuals who can operate with significant independence in tackling complex issues and uplifting strategic policy skills across the department. The job requires sound decision-making to provide high-level policy advice and executive support while managing sensitive projects that impact the strategic direction of the department and shape the future of our industries. Successful applicants will be expected to: Work under pressure on complex policy issues in unpredictable environments, demonstrating agility with consideration for sensitive political factors. Engage stakeholders through co-design and consultation to ensure evidence-informed policy development. Develop policy capabilities in themselves and others, providing advice, guidance, and constructive feedback to team members on career and professional development. Facilitate workshops and deliver training to support strategic policy uplift across the department. Build and maintain networks across the department to engage on and influence cross-cutting policy issues and support engagement between the Strategic Policy Branch and other areas of the department. Support the Director to identify priorities for reform and transformation, including undertaking horizon-scanning to inform the work of the Branch. Lead the planning, organising, and coordination of senior staff policy forums. Support senior staff, the Executive, and the Minister with briefings as required. Provide guidance, support, and supervision to junior staff. What are we looking for Knowledge and Experience Demonstrated experience in navigating complexity and uncertainty with personal drive, sound judgement, and integrity. Experience and sound leadership skills to inspire team members to strive for the best outcomes. Understanding of the Department’s work and priorities is desirable, but not essential. We are looking for candidates from a range of professional backgrounds with a demonstrated ability to drive strategic change in complex operating environments. Experience working directly in a strategic policy context is highly desirable. *On 13 March 2025 the salary range for these positions will increase to $124,861 to $134,295. #J-18808-Ljbffr
