The key duties of the position include The Role The Assistant Director - Youth Programs will work with a high level of autonomy across all facets of the Youth Policy and Programs directorate, encompassing all aspects of Defence's engagement with youth. The role provides a high-level of support to Director Youth Policy and Programs, driving harmonisation across the enterprise, looking for ways to achieve efficiencies and reduce effort across youth engagement programs and initiatives. The role will also work closely with the Assistant Director - Defence Work Experience Program and Assistant Director - Youth Policy in order to contribute to the achievements and strategic outcomes of Defence. The Assistant Director - Youth Programs is responsible for: Driving the intent of the One Defence objectives listed in the Youth Engagement Statement signed by Secretary and Chief of the Defence Force. Assisting to address workforce challenges outlined in the Defence Strategic Review and expand opportunities for priority diversity groups by providing leadership and strategic oversight to the Defence Work Experience Program in Queensland, Northern Territory and Western Australia. Building and sustaining relationships with internal and external stakeholders, exchanging information to achieve business outcomes and shape youth program harmonisation across Defence. Influencing and empowering Defence to support Indigenous youth participation and opportunities through programs and initiatives that enhance Defence capability through diversity, inclusion and an enduring commitment to Reconciliation and Closing the Gap. Exercising sound decision making and judgement, using subject matter expertise to identify and recommend courses of action. As the role requires the provision of leadership and support to geographically dispersed staff, the ability to undertake infrequent travel is required. This position can work flexibly from Defence locations across Australia subject to office accommodation availability, or from home. About our Team The Youth Policy and Programs Directorate is a strategic centre for youth engagement, with three teams delivering Youth Policy, Youth Pathways and the Defence Work Experience Program. Our teams adopt a One Defence approach in the management of their responsibilities and champion Defence's enterprise-wide vision and principles of youth engagement, including the development and implementation of enterprise-wide Defence youth protection and engagement related policies, training and education and the delivery of youth programs. Youth Policy and Programs aims to be an exemplar in delivering the highly regarded Defence Work Experience Programs and Youth Pathways initiatives across Australia. The Directorate is actively driving the harmonisation of youth programs across the department. Our programs and initiatives contribute towards personal and professional development of young people, preparing them for future challenges whilst they gain exposure to the many careers available within Defence. Our initiatives support the national effort to increase opportunities for priority diversity target groups, including female students, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, students from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, and students studying STEM related disciplines.
