About the role The City of Sydney Council is seeking two experienced Category Managers to join our Procurement team within the Chief Finance Office. These roles will oversee procurement activities across two key portfolios: Role 1: Corporate Services – with a focus on IT, HR, and Strategy. Role 2: Construction and Design Consultancy Tenders – supporting the Chief Operations Office. As a Category Manager, you will lead procurement initiatives, ensuring best-practice procurement strategies while maintaining compliance with local government and public sector requirements. You’ll play a pivotal role in shaping procurement outcomes, driving value, and engaging stakeholders effectively. Key Responsibilities: Lead and manage a pipeline of end-to-end procurement projects within your assigned portfolio Develop and implement effective Sourcing Strategies to drive efficiency and value Structure procurement specifications to align with City needs and achieve optimal outcomes Provide expert procurement advice to internal stakeholders, ensuring alignment with organisational goals and procurement best practice Lead supplier negotiations, ensuring value for money and compliance with public sector regulations Implement Category Management for key service categories Mentor and oversee a Procurement Specialist, fostering professional growth and ensuring the successful execution of procurement initiatives. We are looking for strategic and solutions-focused procurement professionals with: Tertiary qualifications in a relevant field or equivalent work experience, plus relevant professional accreditation (e.g., MCIPS) Extensive experience within a central Strategic Procurement function, including at least 2 years of hands-on Category Management experience Proven experience managing procurement projects within your designated folio Strong knowledge of public sector procurement principles and probity requirements Demonstrated leadership skills, with the ability to guide and develop a Procurement Specialist Excellent negotiation skills and the ability to structure procurement specifications for optimal results Sound understanding of contractual clauses within procurement processes Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
