Who are we: The National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre (NDARC) is a world-leader in research that positively impacts alcohol and other drug use and related harms. The Centre, based at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Faculty of Medicine and Health, was established in 1986 in response to an emerging crisis of heroin use. For over 35 years NDARC has been Australia’s leading research centre in the sector. NDARC has a holistic view of the complex challenges associated with the determinants of alcohol and other drug use and associated harms. Using research to address real-world problems, NDARC generates high-quality evidence across an array of fields that directly influences harm reduction in diverse populations internationally. Why this role matters The Centre Manager is based in the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre (NDARC) within the Faculty of Medicine and Health and plays a critical role in providing leadership and effective management of the Centre. The role will be responsible for the development of operational and strategic plans, liaison with industry partner organisations, high level management of administrative tasks, reporting and engaging with key external stakeholders. The role reports to the Director, NDARC and has six direct reports. In addition, the Centre Manager has oversight of other Centres internally hosted by NDARC. Key Responsibilities: A relevant tertiary qualification or an equivalent level of knowledge gained through any other combination of education, health, training and/or experience. Proven experience in research management and administration. Proven experience in leading and managing a team, with a commitment to staff development while driving continuous improvement in processes and performance. High level organisational skills with proven ability to manage multiple tasks, establish priorities and meet deadlines. Demonstrated skills in budget development for funding applications and ongoing management of funds. Experience in administering research contracts and meeting external obligations. Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to liaise effectively with all levels of staff, students, management and external stakeholders. Well-developed skills in problem solving, negotiation and conflict resolution. Advanced computer skills in spreadsheets, database applications, email protocols and internet interfaces. Experience in developing and implementing strategies, policies, and procedures. Demonstrated success in identifying sources of funding and dealing with external sponsors, both in the government sector and charitable institutions. Ability and capacity to direct and monitor the implementation and effectiveness of the safety management system. Please refer to the position description for full details.
