Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance (BHSI) is a general insurer with an exciting opportunity for an Australian-qualified lawyer with insurance industry experience to join our Legal, Risk, Compliance & Governance team based in Sydney, Australia. The role will be principally focused on insurance policy wordings, bespoke and client-specific endorsements, product development and review, for a variety of product lines – wholesale and retail. The role will also involve regulatory requirements, commercial legal work, business initiatives, insurance law advice, and legal compliance for our growing business in both Australia and New Zealand. The successful candidate is someone looking to be challenged, to use and develop their knowledge and skills in policy drafting and to be part of a collaborative team passionate about insurance and customer outcomes. Duties & Responsibilities: Development and review of insurance policy wordings for our wide variety of commercial insurance areas, including property, marine, financial lines, liability, accident & health, healthcare and others; together with select retail lines. Provide a wide variety of insurance advice, as well as corporate and commercial advice. Commercial contract review and negotiation, including intermediary and framework agreements. Support the Legal, Risk & Compliance team in advice, planning for and implementation of new regulatory developments, principally financial services and conduct-type compliance. Working with Risk & Compliance Manager in preparing the business for implementation of legal changes. Involvement in economic and trade sanctions checking and clearance for a diversity of insureds. Working directly with subject matter experts in many insurance fields, aiding them with an array of compliance and related issues and advice. Diversity of legal compliance matters. As needed, legal and compliance training delivery for various business units and teammates. Qualifications, Skills and Experience: Insurance policy wordings drafting experience. 5-7 years’ experience in private or in-house legal practice. Experience in variety of commercial insurance products. Retail wording/product drafting as well as commercial lines would be ideal. AFSL advice experience highly regarded. Understanding of insurance laws and current regulatory environment, particularly in relation to APRA and ASIC in Australia, and RBNZ and FMA in New Zealand. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Motivated, adaptable, collaborative, passionate about insurance. Must be a team player.
