Primary Objective Provide high quality legal advice relating to the prosecution of less complex prosecutions. Provide representation for the prosecution before all courts of the Northern Territory and the High Court of Australia in less complex prosecutions, appeals and related matters. This is a litigation position for an experienced advocate. Key Duties and Responsibilities Evaluate, screen and prepare briefs of evidence in complex indictable matters in accordance with the Director’s guidelines. Maintain carriage of complex criminal prosecutions and instruct junior in Supreme Court trials and the Court of Criminal Appeal. Conduct jury trials, sentences and breach applications before the Supreme Court, appear in committal proceedings and contested summary prosecutions in the Local and Youth Court. Consult, liaise, inform and negotiate with defence counsel, victims, the police officer-in-charge, court staff and the Witness Assistance Service. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing and prepare and present evidence, positions or factual analyses clearly and correctly. Selection Criteria Essential Admitted or eligible for admission as a barrister or solicitor of the High Court or of a Supreme Court of a State or Territory of Australia. Demonstrated experience and knowledge in criminal law and advocacy with the ability to provide high quality legal advice and experience in running jury trials or significant experience in running complex hearings in lower jurisdictions. Demonstrated knowledge of the DPP Guidelines, the Criminal Code (NT) and Uniform Evidence Law, and the procedures of the courts of the Northern Territory or ability to quickly attain relevant local knowledge. Excellent organisational skills with the ability to work under pressure, make sound judgements and prioritise workloads in a busy environment. Proven ability to work independently and with little supervision. Good oral and written communication and negotiation skills with demonstrated ability to effectively engage, negotiate and collaborate with other agencies, defence agencies, Courts, local communities, other external stakeholders and the general public. An ability to interact effectively with people from a variety of cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. Preparedness to undertake intrastate travel and eligible to hold a Driver’s Licence. Hold (or have the capacity to obtain) a current Working with Children Clearance (Ochre Card). Further Information The successful applicant will be required to undergo a criminal history check.
