Job Description

Deputy Harbour Master – Geelong and Regional Ports Victoria (PV) is a statutory authority primarily responsible for the safe navigation of commercial vessels in the port waters of Geelong, Melbourne and Hastings, together with the facilitation of cruise shipping at Station Pier. PV provides a critical service for the international and domestic maritime trade needs of Geelong, Melbourne and south-eastern Australia. PV contributes to the enhancement of the economic and social prosperity for the people of Victoria by providing vital infrastructure and services for trade and tourism. Ports Victoria actively promotes diversity and inclusiveness, fostering a culture and working environment where everyone has a sense of belonging. Following successful internal promotion, PV is now seeking a Deputy Harbour Master to manage the safe navigation of vessels in the waters of the ports of Geelong and Hastings; and to provide strategic management of their team within the Marine Operations Division. The Deputy Harbour Master plays a key role in supporting the Harbour Master to ensure navigation services and marine assets meet State, Commonwealth and international standards; identify, manage, and mitigate risks to PV within the waters of the ports of Geelong and Hastings. The Deputy Harbour Master ensures compliance with relevant legislation including all applicable conventions, regulations, standards, and guidelines; and ensures a 24-7 coordinated response to emergency incidents, including serving as a contact point for port user enquiries. This is an important appointment where success hinges upon a clear understanding and application of relevant maritime legislation, Australian and overseas shipping and port practices, and a highly developed emergency response management, strategic communication and analytical skills capability. Applicant must qualify to be authorised as an Assistant Harbour Master under the provisions of the Marine Safety Act 2010 (Vic). About you You will need to convince us that you are: A well-respected leader with proven experience in an organisation of similar scale and complexity. Have demonstrated understanding of the ports and shipping sectors through your deep technical expertise including proven ability in emergency and environmental response. A contemporary people leader with a strong track record of building a positive and collaborative high-performing workplace culture. You will need to be a confident negotiator on industrial relations issues. A skilled communicator with proven ability in advocacy, stakeholder engagement and relationship building with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
