Director, Sydney Southeast Asia Centre Apply locations: Camperdown Campus Time type: Full time Posted on: Posted 29 Days Ago 5-year fixed-term position Located in Camperdown Campus About the opportunity The Director of the University of Sydney Southeast Asia Centre (SSEAC) is responsible for leading, planning, communicating and achieving the academic and operational vision, strategies and goals of SSEAC in overall alignment with the whole-of-University vision and strategy. This is achieved through collaborative engagement, support and promotion of progressive and productive research and a clear centre strategy. SSEAC is currently one of seven University-wide multidisciplinary initiatives (MDIs) within which the University concentrates intellectual resources from many disciplines to address the grand challenges facing society and to educate the next generation. This is an academic professorial (Level E) position requiring extensive research, research leadership and regional engagement experience in a relevant field that includes one or more countries in Southeast Asia. This position has accountability for setting and meeting the MDI’s strategic and operational objectives. It is responsible for the leadership of an institutionally inclusive, but thematically focused, research strategy that is based on but not limited to the SSEAC vision. The Director has formal financial and people delegations and is responsible for effective decision making to ensure financial sustainability, all of which will further promote the MDI’s and the University’s reputation for excellence and national and international academic standing. About you (skills, capabilities and experience) A PhD in an academic field relevant to the school and a national/international reputation in the field. In-depth knowledge and understanding of the key strategic issues in the higher education sector and relevant academic field focused on Southeast Asia region. Understanding of and ability to lead, develop and support an academic endeavor from producing leading research, to managing key stakeholders and providing an academic enabling environment. Demonstrated capacity to work effectively with external stakeholders, including extensive and high-level links with industry and government and a demonstrated understanding of how industry and government operate. Strong negotiation skills - effectively exploring alternatives to reach outcomes that gain the support and acceptance of stakeholders. Track record in managing financial sustainability and operational needs and practices of an academic unit. Strong track record in competitive grant awards and attracting external research funding. Experience with interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary research and education. Sponsorship / work rights for Australia Visa Sponsorship and relocation assistance will be provided if required. Term and remuneration For internal candidates, this leadership appointment is offered as a secondment opportunity, with a reversionary position retained within your current faculty. For external candidates, a reversionary position will be negotiated as part of the appointment process. This appointment will be offered initially as a five-year fixed-term appointment, subject to the completion of a satisfactory probation period for new appointees. Further appointments are possible, subject to performance and other factors. The successful candidate will be offered a competitive remuneration package commensurate with the responsibilities of the position and the candidate’s relevant experience and qualifications.
