Electrical Engineer – Secondary Systems & Protection Our client is a forward-thinking engineering consultancy based in Melbourne, Australia, dedicated to shaping the future of sustainable energy. Role Summary: Due to recent successes, our client is experiencing rapid growth and is seeking a driven and experienced Electrical Engineer – Secondary Systems & Protection to join their Engineering and Commissioning team. In this role, you will provide electrical engineering services to support clients throughout every phase of their projects, including concept design, detailed design, technical due diligence, owner's engineering roles during design, construction, commissioning, and ongoing operations and maintenance. You will engage in a diverse range of projects and activities, including: Developing and delivering detailed designs for substation secondary systems, including protection, control, and metering systems, with a focus on HV substations, solar farms, wind farms, and BESS electrical balance of plant. Preparing and reviewing design documentation, including schematic diagrams, wiring diagrams, general arrangements, and single-line diagrams. Developing detailed protection/control panel schematic diagrams based on protection/metering single-line diagrams, trip tables, and comms overview drawings. Utilizing AutoCAD and other design tools to create accurate and high-quality drawings. Performing relay settings, configuration, and testing for protection systems. Collaborating with project teams to ensure designs meet technical, regulatory, and client-specific requirements. Conducting site visits to support installation, testing, and commissioning activities as needed. Coordinating with internal and external stakeholders to ensure seamless project execution. Maintaining and adhering to industry standards, including relevant Australian Standards and utility requirements. Providing technical support and troubleshooting for secondary systems during the project lifecycle. Role Requirements: To excel in this role, you will need: A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field. A minimum of 5 years of experience in HV electrical engineering, particularly in substation secondary system design, including protection system design. Proven experience working with Australian Standards and utility requirements . Proficiency in AutoCAD for drafting and design documentation tasks. Strong knowledge of protection relay principles, schemes, and testing . Excellent communication skills , both written and verbal, to interact with clients and multidisciplinary teams. Ability to manage multiple tasks and deliver high-quality work within tight deadlines. Knowledge of SCADA systems, IEC 61850 protocols, and control systems (highly desirable). Eligibility for registration with Engineers Australia . Proficiency in technical report writing and clear presentation of findings. Technical Skills & Experience: Ability to design protection, control, and metering SLDs for substations and electrical balance of plant (eBoP) for wind farms, solar farms, and BESS. Experience working with relays (IEDs) from different manufacturers and familiarity with relay configuration and setting software (highly desirable). Capability to design panel layouts, secondary equipment schedules, protection logic diagrams, schematics, and cable schedules for protection and control systems. Experience in developing building layout designs for switch rooms and control buildings in collaboration with primary, civil, structural, and project design managers. Ability to perform maximum demand calculations for AC and DC auxiliary power supply sizing. Knowledge of IEC 61850 as a standard for protection and control systems (highly desirable). Ability to produce equipment technical datasheets and specifications for substation secondary equipment. Experience working with construction teams to ensure constructability, safety in design, and cost-effectiveness. Ability to collaborate with clients and equipment suppliers to gather design input information.
