Job Description

The Australian Government is seeking applications from suitably qualified people for appointment to the full-time statutory position of Freedom of Information (FOI) Commissioner at the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC). The OAIC is the independent national regulator for privacy and FOI. The OAIC exercises functions under the Privacy Act 1988 (Privacy Act), the Freedom of Information Act 1982 (FOI Act) and the Australian Information Commissioner Act 2010 (AIC Act). The FOI Commissioner is responsible for the efficient and effective management of FOI functions, including promoting awareness and understanding of the FOI Act. The FOI Commissioner conducts reviews of FOI decisions made by agencies and Ministers and investigates complaints, as well as monitors and reports on compliance. The FOI Commissioner has a strong leadership role within the OAIC, and will be required to work closely with the Australian Information Commissioner who, as head of the OAIC, is responsible for driving the strategic direction of the agency and for its performance and corporate operations. The FOI Commissioner may, from time to time, be required to perform other functions under the AIC Act. Information for applicants The appointment will be for a term of up to five years.
