About our team The Data Governance, Strategy and Policy section provides central data governance for the Department of Home Affairs by ensuring safe, responsible, and legitimate use of data and AI. The section is responsible for data governance, data access management, data security, data sharing arrangements (including development and review), data risk management, and data governance capability projects. Data Governance aims to realize the value of data for the Department while managing risk. We engage frequently with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders across government and the community and serve as an intermediary for technical and non-technical communications. Our ideal candidate Seeks the challenges involved in providing effective management of a large and complex organisation's data holdings Exemplifies servant leadership and a collaborative approach to achieving outcomes Is an experienced data professional, with a background in data management and governance Has the ability to work effectively in a highly cross-functional and collaborative environment Possesses excellent verbal and written communications skills Has strong research, analysis, and problem-solving skills Effective team leadership and organisational skills, with experience in Agile ways of working a benefit Demonstrated experience or qualifications in at least one, but ideally more, of the following areas:Data management and/or data governance framework design and implementation Data ethics, privacy, data protection or any other regulatory compliance activity Data-related risks and issues management, either in a project or operational environment Design, optimisation, and operation of data management processes Data, metadata, and/or information architecture Implementation and/or operational experience with data and/or metadata catalogues or registries Change management related to data, including experience with conducting impact assessments. Duties and responsibilities Lead data governance transformation initiatives and provide expert advice on data governance, management, and assurance Lead the implementation of the data governance framework and data management practices across the organisation that ensure trust in responsible management of Home Affairs' data Manage the operation and development of data governance related business processes (e.g., governance assessments, data access) Manage the output and capability growth of a small, agile, multi-disciplinary team to achieve agreed divisional and Departmental outcomes Build effective collaborative relationships with data custodians, compliance professionals (information law, privacy law, records management, cybersecurity), and technologists.
