Job Description

The ACT Government Solicitor (ACTGS) provides legal services, including advice and representation to the ACT, its government agencies, ministers and office holders. The Government Solicitor for the Australian Capital Territory is a body corporate established under the Law Officers Act 2011 (the Act) . The Solicitor-General for the ACT is appointed under the Act and also performs the functions of the Chief Solicitor. The Act provides that the Chief Solicitor may act personally in the name of the Government Solicitor for the ACT and may also authorise other appropriately qualified solicitors to act in the name of the Government Solicitor. The Role The General Manager role (the Role) spans all areas of the organisational operation and is a business-critical function. It has responsibility for ensuring the capabilities required for effective and responsive delivery of legal services to the Territory. Additionally, the Role leads and is responsible for the organisation's governance, financial, technological, physical and people resources. Directly accountable to the Solicitor-General and working collaboratively with the Deputy Chief Solicitor and Executive Group Manager - Legal Practice, the Role is responsible for ensuring agility of the business model, to respond to the evolving demand for Territory legal work. In addition to the day-to-day delivery of business support functions for a complex business model, the Role is responsible for integrating and coordinating corporate activity including budget, resources and services to ensure the availability of ACTGS capability (systems, people and physical resources) and legal services coordination. The Role is also responsible for developing and driving strategies to ensure ACTGS' operations are financially sustainable and is accountable for ensuring execution of the Solicitor-General's (as Chief Solicitor) assurance functions relevant to legal services coordination and compliance. Key Requirements A strong contender for this critical executive role will demonstrate an ability to excel in working, leading and managing within a complex environment. They will be forward-thinking and adept at building strategic relationships with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders. Integrity, judgement, critical and strategic thinking and risk analysis, spanning several core functional areas will be paramount. Additionally, suitable applicants will possess a strong focus and ability to drive and achieve results under significant pressure. Experience in successfully addressing sensitive political and people issues and an impressive personal style and ability to engender trust and respect will be complemented by intellectual rigor, first-class communication skills and impressive interpersonal and relationship-building skills. Experience and expert management of a professional services organisation will be highly regarded. Remuneration The position attracts a remuneration package ranging from $321,988 – $334,882 , depending on the current superannuation arrangements of the successful applicant. This includes a cash component of $286,536. Contract The successful applicant will be engaged under a performance-based long-term contract for a period of up to five years.
