Job Description

We are seeking to appoint a well-qualified, inspirational and enthusiastic music graduate looking to make a direct entry into teaching. This is, in the first instance, a one-year appointment. Upon successful completion of a year in post, a review of progress will be made and, if mutually agreed, a contract extension into a second year may allow access to funded PGCE teacher training and acquisition of Qualified Teacher Status. The successful candidate will also be expected to be a House Tutor. The Graduate Teacher is responsible to the Assistant Head (Academic), the Director of Music and the Housemaster/Housemistress of the House to which they are attached. Music at Lancing College Music is at the heart of life at Lancing and the renowned Choir sings at services in Chapel as well at major cathedrals across the country and has broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and 4, most recently on 27 December 2023. Music at Lancing is extremely well resourced, and the College Chapel is an inspiring setting in which to make music in services and concerts and is fortunate to possess magnificent organs by Frobenius and Walker. Large-scale symphonic and chamber music concerts are frequently given in Great School which houses a Steinway model D and extremely good acoustics for instrumental and choral music. Key Tasks and Responsibilities: Teach up to fifteen 35-minute academic lessons per week across all three terms. Pastoral involvement in a Boarding House to which the Graduate Teacher is attached, being on duty for one evening a week and one weekend per half term. Acting as a tutor to a group of no more than 6 pupils in III to V Form in the House to which attached. To assist with the staffing of pupil recreational facilities at weekends and in the evenings. To assist with the staffing of trips and visits. To assist with the management of school events, e.g. meeting and greeting parents; assisting in House events; assisting in the supervision of pupils and welcoming of logistics at whole-school events (e.g. Carol Services, Founder’s Day). To assist with Common Room duties in the wider supervision of pupils in the evenings. To attend staff inset day at the beginning and end of the term as reasonably required. Key Skills and Qualities required: An individual with a strong Music degree and genuine passion for music. The ability to play the piano/organ or a string instrument would be advantageous; but we could consider applications from other instrumentalists. Ability to support the Music department in the extensive programming of rehearsals, services and concerts, the music library as well as support with administrative tasks. Ability to lead by example and inspire pupils. A good team player who enjoys working with young people and can work with a small team but also work independently. Both a self-starter and a team worker, ability to work well with a range of other people across a vast organisation. Kind, approachable and measured in manner with the ability to form strong working relationships with pupils, colleagues, and parents. IT literate and able to use a range of key packages. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Strong organisational skills, ability to prioritise tasks effectively without compromising discretion or attention to detail. Flexible, adaptable with a sense of humour. Committed to ensuring the welfare of the children in the school and to upholding the highest of professional standards.
