In our short history, we have successfully reinvigorated operations at Carborough Downs underground mine, breathed new life into the Broadlea open cut and we also have our new underground longwall mine at Ironbark No.1 . About the role Reporting to the SSE and Group HSTR Manager, the Health, Safety, Training & Risk Manager is a key member of the operation’s Senior Leadership Team of our Ironbark No 1 mine. The role maintains compliance with relevant Australian mining safety regulations, develops, and implements health and safety policies, and drives continuous improvement in safety practices. The position is key to managing risks, maintaining a safe working environment, and ensuring that all employees are properly trained to prevent accidents and health hazards. Key Responsibilities include Lead the development, implementation, and maintenance of the Health and Safety Management System (HSMS) to assure compliance with the Coal Mine Safety and Health Act 1999 (QLD) and other relevant safety legislation. Coordinate regular safety audits, inspections, and risk assessments to identify hazards (e.g., underground collapses, gas explosions, dust inhalation) and recommend corrective actions. Facilitate investigations into safety incidents, accidents, and near misses, ensuring thorough reporting, analysis, and implementation of corrective measures. Coordinate injury management, return to work from injury and worker’s compensation cases. Develop and assure the implementation of emergency response and evacuation procedures specific to underground mining conditions. Assure appropriate safety measures are in place for handling hazardous materials and gases (e.g., methane, coal dust). Develop and manage the operation’s training program for all site personnel, including inductions, safety training, and ongoing skills development. Oversee the identification of training needs and assure training is aligned with industry standards and regulatory requirements. Assure that all workers are trained in the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), emergency procedures, first aid, and handling hazardous situations. Monitor and track the competency and certification levels of all staff to ensure compliance with safety standards. Organize regular refresher courses to ensure all staff are up to date with safety protocols, equipment operation, and emergency response. Provide training on mental health awareness and worker well-being, ensuring that support programs are available to workers. Identify and assess potential risks within the mining operation through regular hazard identification and risk assessments. Implement risk control measures for the mitigation of identified hazards (e.g., improved ventilation, machine safety protocols, ground stability measures). Develop, monitor, and report on risk management plans for various operational areas, ensuring that effective strategies are in place to control risks. Assure that observations and inspections are carried out regularly and compliance with safety standards is maintained. Lead the continuous improvement process for risk management practices, ensuring that the operation stays at the forefront of safety standards. Assure compliance with local, state, and federal safety laws and regulations. Prepare and submit detailed reports on safety performance, audits, incidents, and compliance to senior management and regulatory authorities. Other matters associated with HST&R as directed by the SSE or Head of HST&R. About You Experience in an underground coal mining environment (desirable) and general working knowledge of the Coal Mining Industry Proven ability to effectively work within a team environment Experience in identifying and implementing opportunities for continuous improvement Exceptional attention to detail and the initiative to follow up on results to ensure accuracy and timeliness of work Excellent interpersonal, cooperative and facilitation skills as part of interfacing with various levels of management and external bodies and agencies Ability to influence and work with a range of people and departments to contribute to site success Fitzroy Benefits for you!
