The Australian Government is seeking applications from suitably qualified persons for appointment as the Inspector-General of Intelligence and Security (IGIS). The position is established under the Inspector-General of Intelligence and Security Act 1986. The IGIS provides independent oversight of the activities of the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation, the Australian Secret Intelligence Service, the Australian Signals Directorate, the Australian Geospatial-Intelligence Organisation, the Defence Intelligence Organisation and the Office of National Intelligence, as well as some activities of the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission and the Australian Federal Police, to ensure that these agencies act legally and with propriety, comply with ministerial guidelines and directions, and respect human rights. The IGIS discharges these responsibilities through a combination of inspections, inquiries and investigations into complaints from members of the public and intelligence agency officials. Key Responsibilities: Provide independent oversight of intelligence agencies. Conduct inspections, inquiries, and investigations. Engage with senior stakeholders from the National Intelligence Community. Qualifications: You will need to be an excellent leader with well-honed conceptual, analytical, and legal skills. Proven ability to coordinate and lead complex investigations and to engage senior stakeholders is essential. This will be complemented by highly developed representational skills, impeccable professional judgement, and a personal style that engenders trust and respect. National security expertise, as well as experience in organisational leadership, is highly desirable. To be eligible for appointment, applicants must have, or be able to hold and maintain, a Positive Vetting security clearance. The appointment will be for a term of up to 5 years.
