Job: 2025-780284 | Full-Time | Fixed Term (June 2025) | Newcastle or Parramatta, NSW This is an Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander identified position which is a genuine occupational qualification and is authorised under section 14(d) of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977. The Aboriginal Legal Service (ALS) was established in a critical act of self-determination over 50 years ago as part of the Aboriginal rights protest movement. We provide high-quality, culturally safe legal and support services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people throughout NSW and the ACT, and fight for social justice and equity for our communities. What will you do? In this role, you will be an integral and valued member of the highly skilled and high-performing Care & Protection/Family Law Practice. You will assist in delivering high-quality legal support services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients by providing administrative support to solicitors, including data entry, front office duties, and assisting with Legal Assistance for Families: Partnership Agreement (LAFPA) tasks. Each day, you can expect to: Ensure client information and other records are accurately reflected in data systems. Participate in processes for opening, closing, and archiving files. Liaise with various professionals, including solicitors, court staff and the Department of Communities and Justice. Review and assess legal documents. Undertake duties in the reception area and operate the office phone system in line with the phone roster between the hours of 9.00am to 5.00pm. Provide high-level secretarial support to Care & Protection/Family Law Practice Solicitors. Provide word processing support using Microsoft Office Systems, including correspondence, preparation of briefs, subpoenas, affidavits, and other legal documents. Assist clients with non-court matters and referrals. Who are we looking for? A highly skilled and motivated individual with a thorough understanding of the cultural, social, and historical needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. You will be able to demonstrate: Identify as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person. Commitment to the principles of social justice. Capacity to behave in a culturally appropriate manner. Proven computer systems skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and Outlook and typing skills with a minimum of 35 wpm. Excellent phone manners and culturally appropriate communication skills when speaking with clients. A knowledge of the cultural and social needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people combined with continuing respect and support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural practices in dealing with clients, their families, communities, and the social issues affecting those communities.
