ABOUT THE ROLE: Under the direction of the Senior Legal Officer, you will work alongside experienced mentors and use your legal skills to assist in the effective delivery of legal services to the Kimberley Land Council, prescribed bodies corporate and native title groups throughout the Kimberley region of Western Australia.KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Legal Complete requirements for and be admitted in the Supreme Court of Western Australia and the High Court of Australia within 12 months of commencing employment. Work effectively as a member of a multi-disciplinary team. Work alongside experienced lawyers and utilise your legal skills to provide legal advice to native title prescribed bodies corporate (PBCs), native title holders and native title claimants throughout the Kimberley Region. Liaise with internal and external stakeholders including PBCs and the KLC’s Native Title Services Unit to deliver high quality legal services. Regularly attend meetings, often in remote locations, to provide information to PBCs, native title holders, and native title claimants, and to assist Lawyers to provide advice. Assist in the representation of native title parties in proceedings before the National Native Title Tribunal and the Federal Court of Australia, and in negotiations with regard for proposals for the use, development and acquisition of land (e.g. future act matters). Undertake research on legal and policy issues, in particular in relation to PBCs and other related native title issues. Escalate serious and sensitive matters where appropriate and make recommendations for continuous improvement. Risk Ensure appropriate risk management and due diligence processes are adhered to. Individual Commitment Actively embrace and integrate KLC’s vision, mission and values into the role, and model appropriate behaviours. Work collaboratively with management and staff across the business in support of KLC’s strategic objectives. Maintain a professional approach in the workplace. Conform to KLC’s conditions of employment, code of conduct, and organisational policies and procedures. Adhere to relevant legislative requirements including and not limited to the Fair Work Act, Work Health and Safety Act and the EEO Act. PERFORMANCE GOALS: Completion of requirements for admission as a lawyer in the Supreme Court of Western Australia. Compliance with all legislation achieved and maintained. As identified in Individual Performance Plan (IPP). Strong time management skills and attention to detail. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including interpersonal skills. Able to prioritise work as part of a team as well as act autonomously. Possess knowledge of the Native Title Act 1993 (Cth), Corporations (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) Act 2006 (Cth), and Aboriginal Heritage Act 1972 (WA), or the ability to acquire that knowledge. Preparedness to travel in the course of work, including by air. Possess a current manual driver’s licence. Desirable: An understanding of court processes and systems and/or previous experience working in a legal environment.
