The role is generally a full-time position; however, there is some flexibility for candidates to work part-time hours on a case-by-case basis, subject to operational requirements. Our ideal candidate Understanding of, or ability to quickly obtain understanding of, relevant portfolio legislation and other legislation of general application Legal advice writing and research skills Clear communication skills Understanding of the Department's policy, program and operations and the political environment May be required to surge to work in different areas within the Legal Group to meet deadlines for priority tasks or fill critical vacancies and may also include work outside of the standard core hours. Duties and responsibilities Providing legal advice on high-profile, complex, technical or sensitive issues, with a focus on delivering accurate legal analysis, options and recommendations, and the strategic management and assessment of legal risks. Providing and managing legal services in accordance with the Legal Services Directions 2017 Liaising with, and actively developing and maintaining working relationships across the Legal Group, the wider Department and with external stakeholders, including representing the Department's interests and positions during liaison and negotiation with external stakeholders Maintaining detailed knowledge of specific legislation, case law, directions, instruments, principles and issues of relevance to the Department, as well as creating complete and accurate records in accordance with the Department's Recordkeeping Policy Providing legal clearance, mentoring and professional support to other legal professionals. Additional information Essential Qualifications A degree in law from an Australian university, or a comparable overseas degree which is recognised in Australia for admission to practice Practising Certificate or eligibility to attain one.
