About the Role The Manager, Academic Skills leads a team of Learning Strategists and Academic Skills Advisers to deliver university-wide programs, resources, and services that enhance student learning, engagement, and success. Overseeing portfolios focused on curriculum-embedding, co-curricular language and learning, technology-enhanced learning, student consultations, and graduate research, the role ensures the development of integrated and scalable support initiatives for students. Collaborating closely with colleagues in Student and Scholarly Services, the position drives student-centred skill development programs that align with institutional learning and teaching priorities. Your responsibilities will include: Lead in the design and delivery of efficient and effective Academic Skills programs, resources and services that support student learning, engagement, and success. Manage the Academic Skills team to design and deliver curriculum-embedded and co-curricular language and learning skills development programs, 1-on-1 student services, technology enhanced learning advice and resources, and graduate researcher professional development. Lead the development of a high-performing team within Academic Skills ensuring compliance with legislation and workplace policies, sustainable workloads, staff engagement with professional development, and a learning culture enabled by innovation, reflective practice, and knowledge sharing initiatives. Oversee the Academic Skills team’s delivery of English as an Additional Language (EAL) support programs, resources and services for students, guided by best practice pedagogies and technologies. Who we are looking for The ideal candidate is an experienced leader with a strong understanding of learning, teaching, and student skill development programs in higher education. They excel at program design and services management, applying sound judgment to complex issues, and using strong interpersonal and communication skills to build relationships, negotiate, and develop creative solutions. You will also have: A Postgraduate qualification and extensive relevant experience, or extensive experience and specialist expertise, or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and education/training. Demonstrated deep functional experience and expertise in the leadership and management of complex, specialist teams and integrated service functions in a higher education context. Strong focus and demonstrated track record in designing and delivering exceptional student skill development support services at scale, using performance data and evidence to drive quality improvement. Demonstrated practical change management experience, including leading staff through service change, developing staff capability and ensuring projects or change initiatives meet service objectives. Additional Information This role requires the successful candidate to undergo and maintain an up-to-date Working with Children Check. This is essential to guarantee a secure environment for all individuals at the University.
