Exciting Opportunity: Manager, Major Prosecutions Take the lead in overseeing the NHVR’s most significant prosecutions and higher court appeals while providing expert recommendations on the commencement and withdrawal of legal proceedings. This pivotal role reports directly to the Director of Prosecutions. This permanent position offers a hybrid working model, and the role can be based in NSW, QLD, VIC, or SA. Key Responsibilities: Supervise and direct the work of Principal Prosecutors and technical specialists in the Heavy Vehicle National Law, ensuring impartial, high-quality adjudications. Coordinate and manage the prosecution team's court appearances, including summary and indictable hearings, call-overs, and appeals. Oversee disclosure, legal advice, and written correspondence. Manage inquiries and appearances before Coronial courts in all jurisdictions. Lead the ongoing legal education and professional development of the prosecution team. Mentor and motivate staff to consistently deliver high-quality prosecution services for the NHVR. Maintain an in-depth understanding of legal constraints and precedents influencing Heavy Vehicle National Law breaches and regulations. Provide expert legislative and regulatory advice to operational staff and prosecutors. Lead sensitive and complex negotiations for early case resolutions. Conduct comprehensive research and analysis to inform the development of prosecution programs and policies. Identify and manage risks within the NHVR’s risk management framework. Skills and Capabilities: Proven experience in prosecutions or litigation, including trial preparation, handling indictable and summary proceedings, and interpreting relevant Acts. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with staff, prosecutors, witnesses, police, counsel, and the public. Demonstrated leadership capabilities and the ability to foster effective teamwork. A firm commitment to maintaining ethical standards within a prosecutorial framework. Qualifications and Experience: Admission or eligibility for admission as a Solicitor, Barrister, or Legal Practitioner in the Supreme Court of an Australian State or Territory. At least 5 years of post-qualification experience in litigation preparation and conduct. A commitment to maintaining professional standards, including confidentiality, adherence to prosecutorial guidelines, impartiality, and managing conflicts of interest. Willingness to work outside business hours and travel intrastate or interstate, including overnight stays. A valid driver’s license. Highly Regarded: Extensive experience in preparing and/or conducting criminal or regulatory trials and statutory interpretation. Experience representing the Crown as lead counsel in criminal or regulatory prosecutions. Why Join Us?
