It evaluates the suitability of applicants and registered teachers and accredits initial teacher education programs in Victoria. A VIT hearing panel may be convened to hear and determine matters related to a teacher's conduct, fitness to teach and/or competency. A matter may also be referred to a hearing panel where VIT believes that the registration of a teacher may have been obtained by fraud or misrepresentation. Panels may be informal, formal or medical, and may be convened by the VIT following an investigation arising from a complaint, a notification to the VIT by an employer of a teacher, a referral from the Commissioner for Children and Young People, the teacher's criminal history or by VIT's own motion. Hearing panels must be appointed from a pool of persons approved under the Education and Training Act 2006 .
