Title: Mineralogist Work Location: Balcatta, Perth – Fortescue’s green iron research & development facility is located on the traditional lands of the Whadjuk Noongar people. Roster: Monday to Friday In this critical role as a Mineralogist, you will be a core member of the R&D Minerals team, responsible for advancing mineralogical understanding to support the development of green iron technology. Based in Western Australia, you will work closely with scientists, engineers, and technical staff to design innovative solutions for large-scale mineral processes and mass transfer in continuous operations. Key Responsibilities Safety and Collaboration: Foster a safe, innovative, and collaborative working environment within the R&D team. Mineralogical Analysis: Lead the characterisation of minerals and materials to optimise processing efficiency and support the development of green iron technology. Process Development: Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to design mineral separation processes and validate laboratory findings at a pilot scale. Research and Reporting: Conduct detailed mineralogical investigations, including petrographic, spectroscopic, and X-ray diffraction analysis, to inform process design. Partnerships and Vendors: Engage with external laboratories and vendors to acquire advanced analytical tools and oversee their implementation. Data Management: Interpret mineralogical and process data to identify key trends, drawing actionable insights to improve performance. Innovation and IP Strategy: Contribute to the intellectual property strategy by documenting research findings and supporting patent development. Technical Training: Mentor junior team members, sharing mineralogical expertise to enhance team capabilities. Qualifications and Experience Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Geology, Mineralogy, Earth Sciences, or a related field; advanced degrees are advantageous. Experience: 5+ years of experience in mineralogical research, with an emphasis on process mineralogy or materials characterisation. Technical Skills: Proficiency in mineralogical techniques such as XRD, SEM-EDS, QEMSCAN, or Raman spectroscopy. Experience in hydrometallurgical or pyrometallurgical processes is desirable. Analytical Expertise: Strong knowledge of mineral behaviour in separation processes, including leaching and flotation. Communication: Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with experience working in multidisciplinary teams. Project Management: Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities in a fast-paced R&D environment.
