Who We Are ALARA Logistics is a small, privately owned company experiencing a period of both growth and maturity. We are a specialized logistics company headquartered in Houston, TX, with additional offices in Australia and South Korea. We focus on all phases of transportation including high-consequence material, difficult-to-transport cargo, oil-industry projects, and hazardous cargo from conception to production. We have a small team (15-20 people in Houston) of professionals with specialized experience and licenses in the transportation industry, as well as administrative and warehouse staff. Who You Are This role is a great fit for someone who has previously worked as a Dangerous Goods delivery driver/freight handler and is looking to extend their skills into the administration and sales element of Logistics operations. You will be physically fit and can perform tasks requiring manual handling. You are honest, accountable, and knowledgeable with the ability to perform in this role with a high level of discretion and professionalism. You will have the desire to further develop work-related skills and talents, combined with integrity, responsibility, and ownership, are vital qualities that will help you succeed personally and professionally. Summary You will primarily be responsible for general warehousing duties and transporting hazardous materials safely and securely to designated locations within South Australia and occasionally travel to other areas within Australia. The position involves the administration of logistical operational activity commencing from the quoting of services, taking off bookings for shipments from clients, packaging, preparation and completion of regulatory paperwork/forms, physical delivery, statutory reporting, and client invoicing. This will frequently involve the use of third-party logistics service providers. Role and Responsibilities You should be able to demonstrate your ability to perform the following tasks within the first 12 months of starting in the role: Transportation Transport of hazardous materials and strict adherence to safety protocols and personal protective equipment (PPE). Manage the safe transportation of a variety of dangerous goods, including flammable, toxic, corrosive, and radioactive materials, following all applicable regulations and internal protocols. Perform maintenance checks and upkeep the high standard of cleanliness of company vehicles and heavy equipment. Load, unload, and secure hazardous materials according to specified guidelines to prevent spillage or leakage during transit. Plan delivery routes efficiently to optimize time and minimize risks associated with hazardous cargo transportation. Maintain accurate records of deliveries, vehicle inspections, and incident reports as required by company policies and regulatory agencies. Communicate effectively with dispatchers, customers, and regulatory authorities regarding delivery schedules, incidents, and compliance matters. Correct invoicing and payments of logistics operations. Respond appropriately to emergencies or incidents involving dangerous goods, following established emergency response procedures (if required). Warehouse Implementing effective storage solutions to optimize space and accessibility. Ensuring inventory is properly labeled, stacked, and stored securely. Regularly updating inventory records to reflect accurate stock levels. Sweeping, mopping, vacuuming and disposing of waste to maintain a neat environment. Reporting any malfunctioning equipment for prompt repairs. Conducting routine checks on warehouse machinery and tools. Safely operating equipment according to manufacturer guidelines. Familiarizing yourself with emergency procedures and protocols. Acting swiftly and decisively in case of emergencies to ensure the well-being of all personnel. Task Management You will actively seek/provide regular feedback and support to ensure each shipment’s success. Keeping an up-to-date list of key contacts and interfaces. Radiation Protection and Measurement (if Required) You will develop foundational knowledge of radiation safety principles, which will improve over time within the role. You will learn to operate and select the appropriate radiation instrument for the monitoring task. You will conduct radiation surveys to assess radiation levels (Dose Rates) for the purposes of the calculation of Transport Indexes and Categories. Ensuring correct PPE is in use when working with radioactives and personal radiation monitors remaining in calibration. Regulatory Compliance Sound knowledge of local and national regulations governing the transportation of dangerous goods (Dangerous Good Declaration). Ensure all items are packaged correctly and with compliant packaging (i.e appropriate in date). You will develop a high level of understanding of the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations. Ensure all activities and processes are as per regulations set out by, Department of Energy, Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety, Borderforce, ASNO and ARPANSA. Security systems and processes are functional and fit for purposes as per regulatory requirements. Familiarise yourself with relevant state, territory and commonwealth regulations or codes of practice about radiation safety. You will assist in maintaining compliance with regulatory requirements and promptly address deviations or non-compliance issues (ARPANSA/ASNO). Customer Service You can communicate clearly with clients by email and phone. You can generate basic quotations under guidance as required. Digital Systems Microsoft Office. Cargowise. DG Office. Major 3PL Logistics providers interfaces (eg Qantas, Virgin, Toll etc). Education and Experience Valid C Class Driver’s License. Forklift License (High Risk License Class LF). Dangerous Goods by Air (IATA). Dangerous Goods by Land and Sea. License to Transport Radioactive substances. Ability to interpret and execute packaging and documentation requirements as per IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations. Proven experience in the safe handling and transportation of dangerous goods, preferably in a delivery or logistics role. Demonstrated knowledge and experience of load restraint principles and relevant legislation. Exhibit safe manual handling principles when performing physical movements of good shipments. Authority You will have the authority to immediately stop and make safe any task that threatens health, property, or the environment. Required Skills By developing strong communication and interpersonal skills, you can effectively convey your thoughts and ideas while building positive relationships with colleagues and clients. It is essential to be able to organize and manage your own time, taking ownership of issues and prioritizing action items to achieve deadlines and company goals. Attention to detail is crucial when undertaking assigned duties, ensuring that tasks are completed accurately and efficiently. Being resourceful, showing initiative and resolving challenges or problems as they arise demonstrates a proactive approach to work. Other Duties On very rare occasions some work may be required to be performed out of normal business hours, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and public holidays. Any significant time spent working outside of normal hours will be given back as time in lieu.
