Job Description

The Pathology Assistant would be based at the Caboolture Laboratory, participating in all aspects of specimen reception and other routine operations of the laboratory. The collecting of blood from inpatients and outpatients may also be required. Caboolture Laboratory is part of The Prince Charles Hospital Group of laboratories which includes The Prince Charles, Redcliffe and Caboolture Hospitals. Whilst the primary work location is at Caboolture Hospital, movement between sites may be required and will be undertaken with appropriate consultation. The successful candidate will receive and register specimens for Biochemistry, Haematology/Coagulation, Microbiology and Serology. Your key responsibilities Prepare specimens for testing in the Caboolture Laboratory, or aliquot and package specimens for transport to referral laboratories in accordance with Pathology Queensland procedures and maintain appropriate despatch records. Ensure that specimens processed by Specimen Reception are prioritised, processed and distributed to laboratory work-stations in a timely manner. Respond to routine enquiries regarding specimen collection and delivery requirements, and the status of test requests. Perform operational duties which include restocking pathology consumables, maintaining clean work areas and assisting where directed. Collection of appropriate quality blood and non-blood specimens from clients of Pathology Queensland as per documented protocols. Liaise with patients, medical and non-medical staff in a professional manner to ensure correct collection and processing of specimens and efficient operation of the specimen collection department. Ensure correct patient identification, labelling and collection techniques are followed according to documented policies and procedures. Participate in relevant ongoing education and assist in staff training. Maintain a professional attitude and behaviour when dealing with staff and clients. Work with integrity, comply with expected ethical and behavioural standards, respect patient's confidentiality and know the importance of patient information. Comply with NATA/ISO accreditation/certification requirements including the preparation of procedure manuals and completion of relevant statistics. Comply with and utilise procedures, policies, regulations and standards which impact upon the position including Queensland Health Code of Conduct, contemporary human resource management requirements and practices, such as workplace health and safety, equal employment opportunity and anti-discrimination policy. Within the context of the responsibilities described above under ‘your key responsibilities', the ideal applicant will be someone who can demonstrate the following: Demonstrated experience & knowledge of the procedures and processes of Specimen Reception. Demonstrated experience & knowledge or the ability to acquire knowledge in the correct procedures of specimen collection/phlebotomy including the application of established policies and guidelines with minimal supervision. Demonstrated knowledge of the importance of standard precautions in dealing with patients and biological specimens. Proven ability to follow instructions and work conscientiously and accurately with minimal supervision after careful instruction. Proven ability to work effectively as a member of a team and to communicate effectively with clients, clinical staff and colleagues. Positive focus upon patient care within a hospital health care environment. Demonstrate a high level of commitment to the principles of quality management and continuous quality improvement. Demonstrate data entry skills with the ability to work accurately and give attention to detail.
