Postdoctoral Research Fellow/Research Officer Apply locations St Lucia Campus time type Full time posted on Posted 2 Days Ago job requisition id R-48726 School of Mechanical and Mining Engineering, Faculty of EAIT Full-time (100%), fixed-term position for up to 12 months Base salary will be in the range $80,448.78 - $107,104.10 + 17% Superannuation (Academic Level A) Visa sponsorship is not available for this position Based at our St Lucia Campus About This Opportunity This is an exciting opportunity for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow / Research Officer to conduct research within the School of Mechanical and Mining Engineering, focusing on the study of the surface modification and formability of roll-bonded bi-metallic hybrid plates. Key responsibilities will include: Research: As part of the ARC Training Centre for Innovative Composites, you will collaborate with a cross-disciplinary team of researchers and students to achieve project objectives. Your focus will be on investigating the mechanical properties and wear resistance of laser-cladded ceramic coatings on titanium alloy and steel, analysing their correlation with microstructure. Study the formability of surface-modified bi-metallic hybrid plates and utilise advanced characterisation techniques such as SEM, TEM, EDS, XRD, and XPS. Additionally, conduct nano-indentation, nano-scratch, nano-wear, and pin-on-disk tests to assess mechanical and tribological properties while exploring the microstructural evolution during rapid solidification. Document and publish in high-quality refereed journals, books, and conference proceedings. Supervision and Researcher Development: You will supervise Honours and Higher Degree by Research students, ensuring effective mentorship and researcher development. Manage supervision responsibilities efficiently, promptly resolving conflicts in line with university policies. Additionally, contribute to teaching undergraduate courses as needed. Citizenship and Service: Demonstrate citizenship behaviours aligned with UQ values, collaborating on priority activities and supporting team operations during absences. Contribute to internal service roles, decision-making, and committee participation while engaging in external service activities. Additionally, you will develop partnerships with industry, government, and professional bodies to strengthen external relationships. This is a research focused position. Further information can be found by viewing UQ’s Criteria for Academic Performance. About You Completion or near completion of a PhD in Materials or Mechanical Engineering. An emerging profile in research in the discipline area. Evidence of publications in reputed refereed journals and presenting at conferences. Some experience in meaningful internal service roles and contributions towards external activities. Proficient knowledge of material properties, characterisation, and processing, as well as nano-/micro-mechanics. Experience with laser surface engineering. Experience with a range of basic and advanced electron microscopic analysis techniques, including TEM, SEM, EDX, WDS, EBSD and EPMA. Experience with XRD and XPS analysis. Experience in FIB lift-up technique for TEM specimen preparation, optical microscopy characterisation and analysis using image processing technique. Expertise in mechanical properties measurement and characterisation of interfacial properties. Experience in finite element modelling.
