As a Principal Power Systems Engineer at WSP, you will be at the forefront of our technical leadership in the power systems sector. This role is pivotal in advancing our capabilities, ensuring the successful delivery of complex projects, and showcasing our expertise to clients and the broader industry. You will focus on key markets such as offshore wind, onshore wind and solar, battery energy storage (BESS), green hydrogen, traditional generation and loads, contributing significantly to our business growth and innovation. What you’ll do: Represent WSP in the power systems market, encompassing a broad range of assets and skill sets related to: Power system planning for substations, transmission lines, generators, FACTs devices and other network assets Owner’s Engineering services for power generation plants, especially renewable generation Services for large power users, including green hydrogen and other industrial plants Power system analysis for mining and other industries Grid connection and generator performance standards development Grow and nurture WSP’s technical capability in power systems through: Developing frameworks for technical development in power systems Mentoring and coaching other staff Delivering internal training Informing recruitment needs Oversee the technical verification of key deliverables Represent WSP and build the WSP brand through attendance and presentations at industry conferences Contribute to business development by connecting with networks and building relationships Lead, prepare, and contribute to bids and proposals Lead and undertake key technical tasks across a range of generation and power systems-related projects Prepare written technical reports on small to medium projects Prepare proposal scope, methodology, and costing for power systems-related projects Conduct classical power system analysis and modelling for studies such as: Load flow, transient stability, generator performance as per the NER, insulation coordination, cable/transformer energization, steady state load flow, short-circuit analysis, protection settings, and coordination Perform field validation of generator performance via commissioning and hold point testing activities, including preparation of hold point testing reports About you: Hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering (Electrical) or equivalent Extensive practical experience within a relevant role, typically 7+ years in consultancy Broad understanding of design and construction of power systems assets, including transmission lines and substations Strong understanding of power flow in transmission and distribution networks, with hands-on experience in power system analysis Strong understanding of the National Electricity Rules and the generator connection process Experience across a range of service types such as optioneering, conceptual design, detailed design, and advisory Experience in project delivery in a consulting environment Proven stakeholder engagement skills, including the ability to communicate risk and complex technical matters to non-technical audiences Proven ability to guide and mentor junior team members Ability to prepare and review technical design and reporting Proficiency in power system modelling software, including some or all of the following: PSS/E, PSCAD, PowerFactory, ETAP, SKM PTW Excellent technical presentation, written, and verbal communication skills Balances innovation, quality, and technical excellence with delivery to timelines and budget Flexible to meet project outcomes and open to feedback Manages self under pressure and lives the company and project's vision and guiding principles Imagine a better future for you and a better future for us all.
