About The Role The Emergency Short Stay Unit (ESSU) at John Hunter Hospital is dedicated to delivering exceptional, short-term care to patients requiring observation, treatment, and stabilisation before discharge or transfer. As a pivotal part of our hospital's emergency services, the ESSU manages a diverse patient cohort, presenting a wide spectrum of medical conditions in a dynamic and fast-paced clinical setting. At the heart of our unit is an unwavering commitment to excellence, supported by a strong, collaborative team culture. We provide extensive guidance to ensure a seamless transition into the ESSU, with every shift under the expert supervision of a Clinical Nurse Unit Manager. You will also benefit from the mentorship of Clinical Nurse Educators, Clinical Nurse Specialists, and Nurse Practitioners, fostering both professional growth and clinical confidence. Our multidisciplinary team extends beyond nursing and medical professionals to include administrative staff, social workers, physiotherapists, pharmacists, occupational therapists, and dedicated ancillary personnel - all working in unison to deliver comprehensive, patient-centred care. Level 6 Emergency Department Our department specialises in trauma, neurosurgical emergencies, neurology patients (including acute stroke), major orthopaedic, cardiology and cardiothoracic cases, and paediatric/adolescent mental health. With over 85,000 presentations annually, our ED is one of the busiest mixed Adult/Paediatric Tertiary Referral Centres in Australia and the only Trauma Referral Centre in NSW outside of Sydney.
