The HP4 Scientist, in General Haematology PAH, reports to the Chief Scientist of Haematology PAH. The role is to apply high level scientific knowledge, skills, experience and scientific leadership to the General Haematology department, PAH and associated district laboratories of the PAH laboratory group (Redland, Logan, Ipswich and QEII laboratories). The General Haematology section at PAH performs full blood counts, blood film morphology, ESR’s, Malarial parasite screening and coagulation testing for PAH. The successful candidate will apply advanced scientific judgement combined with integrated evidence based practice to make complex scientific decisions in support of the high level clinical services performed at Princess Alexandra Hospital. Your key responsibilities Apply high level knowledge and scientific skills in exercising independent professional judgement in problem solving, and scientific leadership within multiple areas of Haematology. Initiate and develop solutions to laboratory work, analytical, and quality processes to increase accuracy and efficiency. Act as a recognised reference resource in training, education, quality, and troubleshooting. Provide advice to colleagues, clients and supervisory management regarding operational matters. Maintain a sound knowledge of NATA/ISO accreditation/certification requirements including performing quality control procedures, assisting with preparation and review of documents, auditing, performing quality assessments and completion of relevant statistics. Collaborate closely with the Chief Scientist, Supervising Scientist, General Haematology, and the Advanced Scientist, Coagulation, on matters of testing, quality, validations, technical, scientific, staffing and training. Provide scientific education and supervision for less experienced practitioners. Key competencies (role specific criteria) Demonstrated high level of scientific knowledge and skill in Haematology and an ability to apply advanced scientific judgement within a haematology laboratory including coagulation. Demonstrated independent application of scientific expertise to lead service quality and improvements in haematology practices and contribute to training and technical competency activities. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively by utilising interpersonal skills to build and maintain professional relationships with clients and colleagues and to align a team and influence the culture. Demonstrated high level knowledge of quality assurance and maintenance of quality management systems in accordance with relevant legislative and professional standards, and to NATA/ISO accreditation/certification. Demonstrated ability to solve and investigate complex scientific problems. Demonstrated commitment to continuing education. Awareness of the human resource management policies applicable to contemporary workplaces. Qualifications, registrations and other requirements The successful applicant must hold a Bachelor of Applied Science (Medical Laboratory Science) degree. As this is a senior scientific position the incumbent will have considerable demonstrated high-level experience in a clinical haematology laboratory. Appointment to this position requires proof of qualification and/or registration with the appropriate registration authority, including any necessary endorsements, to be provided to the employing service prior to the commencement of service.
