Tesla is looking for a Senior Counsel, Energy Products (APAC), based in our Sydney or Melbourne offices, to support the growth of our business in the Asia-Pacific region. This role will focus on major projects, construction, corporate and other related matters with an emphasis on our commercial & industrial and utility-scale solar and energy storage businesses across Australia, New Zealand and the wider APAC region, as well as our retail energy business in Australia. You will also support our International Corporate team with establishing and administering local subsidiary companies. Our ideal candidate would have a background in (energy-focused) renewable energy equipment sales and service, project development, real estate, construction, corporate and finance deal work and be passionate about accelerating the world’s transition to sustainable energy. As this is an APAC-regional role, fluency in spoken and written Mandarin (Simplified Chinese) or other APAC regional languages would be highly valuable. What You’ll Do Provide advice on a wide variety of strategic regulatory and transactional matters for the Energy Products business around the APAC region, including commercial and consumer matters. Assist with structuring and negotiating Energy Products sales, service and project finance and development-related transactions including equipment supply, construction, maintenance, lease, power purchase, software services, performance guarantee and warranty and commodity procurement and sales agreements for solar, energy storage projects, support creative financing transactions related to the foregoing and assist with the development of Tesla-owned generation and storage projects. Advise on the sale, installation and maintenance of Powerwall, Megapack, and on energy commodity offerings, both direct to consumers and through channel partnerships, and support the business as it seeks to grow at scale around the APAC region. Assist on new market entry and new product launches for the Energy Products business around the APAC region. Liaise with colleagues in support of consistency of contracts and risk allocation across the global Commercial business. Liaise with our International Corporate team in the EU to establish and administer new corporate entities in Australia and the wider APAC region. What You’ll Bring Excellent academic credentials, preferably with a J.D. or high Honours degree. A current Australian practising certificate. A minimum of 7 years’ post-qualification experience at a well-regarded law firm or comparable in-house experience at a company in the energy industry strongly preferred. A level of fluency in written (Simplified Chinese) and spoken Mandarin or other regional APAC languages would be valued. Experience structuring and negotiating components of complex, financeable transactions in the energy space, with a preference for renewable energy experience. A team player with the ability to work proactively in identifying problems, drive projects forward, make complex cost/benefit assessments, and identify pragmatic/creative legal and business solutions. Ability to work both autonomously and collaboratively and to juggle competing priorities in a fast-paced, challenging environment. A quick and flexible learner, intellectually curious, open-minded, adaptable, comfortable with ambiguity and risk, and excited by dynamic change. Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to quickly earn the confidence of your colleagues and effectively communicate with people at all levels of the organization.
