Senior Town Planner - Major Projects & Investment Full-time Permanent, Full-time Join the Statutory Planning team Hume City Council is one of Australia’s fastest growing and culturally diverse councils. In this role you will implement, communicate and apply planning principles, acting as an intermediary for and to the public, developers, Council and other Officers on statutory planning matters, with a focus on applications involving major projects and investment and Council capital projects in Hume. What you’ll be doing: Assessing and appraising the merits of planning applications involving the application of discretionary decision-making, including the preparation of internal reports and reports to Council and Council’s Delegate in accordance with the schedule of delegation and relevant acts and legislation under supervision from Team Leaders, Coordinators and the Manager where appropriate. Assess and manage all types of planning applications, with a focus on Major Projects & Investment applications as well as Council capital projects. Reviewing and signing off delegate reports for statutory planning applications and mentoring Statutory Planning Officers as required. Inspecting sites prior to determination of application to ascertain planning merit. Implementation of decisions of Council and Council’s Delegate on planning matters. Maintaining a high level of co-operation between residents, officers, applicants and the Planning and Development Division. Liaising and negotiating with developers, applicants, the public and interest groups on planning matters. Providing guidance and/or advice to administrative staff in respect to the preparation of standard correspondence. Representing Council at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal when required. Remaining informed about legislative changes that affect the responsibilities of the Statutory Planning Section. Keeping informed about issues affecting the operation and responsibilities of the Statutory Planning Section through relevant literature and seminars. The skills and experience you’ll bring to the role: Tertiary qualifications in Town Planning or a similar field with relevant experience in Town Planning or extensive experience in Town Planning with lesser tertiary qualifications. Substantial experience in the field or specialist expertise is essential. Demonstration of a high level of verbal and written communication skills with people from a broad range of backgrounds and cultures. A demonstrated ability to liaise effectively on specialist matters with other Town Planners in the field, and other employees within the organisation to improve existing systems. A demonstrated ability to work within a team as well as providing a mentor/support role to team members with less experience. A knowledge of Town Planning legislation, principles, processes and policies as relates to the organisation and in a broader context. A demonstrated ability to proactively solve complex problems, carry out effective research and an understanding of the consequences of any planning proposal within a strategic framework. Demonstrated skills involving the ability to advocate debate and mediate. A demonstrated ability to manage time, set priorities and manage and organise one's own work to achieve the desired result.
