Skills Development Casual Instructor/Helper The Queensland Cyber Infrastructure Foundation (QCIF) is a non-profit organisation that provides cutting-edge digital infrastructure capabilities for research and innovation across Queensland and Australia. QCIF draws investment from its Members, the Queensland Government, and the Australian Government’s National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS) program. About QCIF’s Skills Development As data science and advanced digital tools rapidly become essential in research projects and disciplines, QCIF Skills Development supports researchers of all levels of experience to take advantage of digital research infrastructure capabilities across software tools, methods, and computing. We provide detailed researcher guidance and upskilling through a network of on-site data science and research computing specialists, an extensive program of short practical training seminars, and by fostering communities of practitioners. QCIF Skills Development provides training, coaching, and other support activities to researchers, students, and professional staff at our Member universities. Increasingly, QCIF looks to also support innovation in all industries by providing upskilling opportunities, especially aligned with the ubiquitous need for adoption of AI for commercial competitiveness in the market. About the Role The Skills Development Casual Instructor is responsible for providing data and digital skills training and support to QCIF’s clients. The position plays a crucial role in supporting the continuous professional development of the research infrastructure community by delivering engaging, high-quality seminars focused on the technical skills essential to digitally enabled research. The Instructor must have strong communication skills, a deep knowledge of seminar content, and the ability to adapt content and teaching strategies to suit a wide range of participants with diverse data and digital research literacies. The Skills Development Casual Helper plays a vital support role in ensuring the smooth and effective running of training seminars. The Helper must be proactive in identifying and troubleshooting technical issues that attendees may encounter and providing timely solutions to maintain seminar momentum. Strong communication skills, an understanding of technical tools, and the ability to stay organised are essential for success in this role. By offering hands-on support, the Skills Development Casual Helper contributes to a positive learning environment, helping participants stay engaged and focused on developing their skills efficiently. This role is paid at two different pay rates depending on whether you will be Instructing or Helping for each training session. The QCIF Skills Development Helper is paid at $50 per hour and Instructors are paid at $75 per hour. Key responsibilities Instructor: Training and consultation Deliver training seminars from QCIF’s course catalogue Update course content, manage training seminars, communicate with registered participants, and answer participant queries Evaluation and feedback Collate and analyse feedback from seminar participants to assess the effectiveness of seminars Provide recommendations for improvements and implement changes based on feedback and evaluation results Record keeping and reporting Maintain accurate records of seminars, participant information, and feedback Helper: Training and consultation Offer and provide guidance and technical support to the seminar participants during the seminar Manage seminar disruptions such as late arrivals to allow the lead instructor to continue uninterrupted Review and be familiar with the training materials Provide support in the configuration and setup of participant’s software and assistance with accessing seminar materials About you Essential qualifications and experience Instructor: Tertiary qualification equivalent to a postgraduate degree in Education and/or Computer Science; or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training Demonstrated understanding of current trends in data and digital research training, preferably in a higher education or equivalent research-intensive environment Experience in a learning and teaching environment, with proven ability to create a positive learning environment and generate positive learning outcomes Helper: Tertiary qualification equivalent to an undergraduate degree in Education and/or Computer Science; or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training Desirable qualifications and experience Carpentries Instructor training or equivalent teacher/education training Demonstrated teaching experience in a higher education setting or an industry/government training environment Experience using and/or training with REDCap will be highly regarded Experience with applied AI and Machine Learning will be highly regarded Organisational Relationships The Skills Development Casual Trainers are members of QCIF’s Skills Development team and report to the Executive Manager, Skills Development Pat Loria. Location The role will work from the QCIF offices at one of our Member universities, with a Brisbane location preferred. Flexible working arrangements may be negotiated. How to apply?
