Job Description About the role The Student Counsellor occupies a specialised role reporting to the Director of Counselling and Academic Services, and works closely with the relevant senior leaders, heads of year, studies directorate and the Director of Boarding. This is a fixed term, one year contract role commencing in Term 2, 2025. Role responsibilities include: Liaising with the Director of Counselling and Academic Services, and Senior Leaders on student welfare matters. Provision of relevant personal, careers, and academic counselling across Years 5 to 12. Assisting students with tertiary pathways including interstate and international applications. Mediation with students, staff, and parents when necessary. Facilitation and interpretation of psychometric assessment when required. Assisting in responding to critical incidents as directed. Supporting members of staff in their positive relationships with students. Assisting staff and parents by facilitating appropriate referrals to external practitioners. Maintaining standards of practice that are consistent with registration boards and membership of professional associations. Desired Skills and Experience Skills and Experience The successful candidate will work as part of a successful team where professionalism, a sense of humour and a positive disposition is highly valued. They must be self-motivated and able to think and act in a professional manner without being prompted. They should be capable of developing and maintaining friendly and productive working relationships with colleagues and students. As a minimum, we are looking for professional registration / membership with one of the following bodies: Australian Psychological Society; and/or Queensland Guidance and Counselling Association Queensland College of Teachers is not mandatory, but will be viewed favorably Our ideal candidate will demonstrate: Experience as a psychologist, guidance officer, or student counsellor in an educational setting Relevant postgraduate qualifications and commitment to ongoing professional development and supervision A comprehensive understanding of tertiary entrance processes (QLD, interstate, and international) A capacity to assist with the development of mental health programmes across Years 5 to 12 An engaging and confident approach when interacting with students Commitment to implementing a safe working environment and modelling safe practice Eligibility for a blue card (Queensland working with children check) positive notice and a blue card Understanding of and commitment to the ethos of independent schooling A willingness to participate in the co-curricular program at the school Ability to perform the physical requirements of the role in a safe manner Application Process Brisbane Grammar School recognises the value of diverse thinking and we encourage qualified candidates from diverse backgrounds to apply.
