Aboriginal Peak Organisations of the Northern Territory (APO NT) is an alliance of Aboriginal organisations committed to increasing Aboriginal involvement in policy development and implementation, and to expanding opportunities for Aboriginal community control across all sectors. APO NT also seeks to strengthen networks between peak Aboriginal organisations and smaller regional Aboriginal organisations in the NT. Salary packaging options up to $18,450 per annum tax free (conditions apply) Annual airfare allowance 6 weeks annual leave 3 weeks personal leave About the role We are seeking a dynamic and motivated Media and Communications Officer to join our team at APO NT. The successful candidate will play a key role in strengthening our media relations, developing communication strategies, and supporting the delivery of strategic projects that focus on the priorities of Aboriginal people and communities in the Northern Territory. Key Responsibilities Respond to media and communication inquiries, providing strategic media-relations support, including identifying emerging media issues and facilitating appropriate responses based on APO NT’s positioning. Develop and execute media, communication, and social media plans and campaigns that align with APO NT’s key communication and engagement principles. Collaborate with APO NT members and stakeholders to promote priority projects and policy positions through effective media and communications. Prepare and oversee the distribution of publications, reports, media statements, and submissions. Conduct research and provide advice on key issues affecting Aboriginal people and communities, ensuring APO NT’s priorities are reflected in communications. Assist in the coordination of workshops, forums, and other events organised by APO NT. Support team cohesion, management, and motivation, ensuring the smooth functioning of the team. Selection Criteria Proven experience in responding to media enquiries, monitoring media coverage, and collaborating with stakeholders to deliver media and communication strategies in a complex and high-profile environment. Exceptional written communication skills, with experience preparing formal correspondence, media statements, public relations materials, and event content tailored to diverse audiences. Strong organisational and time management skills with the ability to prioritise tasks and complete work accurately and efficiently within tight deadlines. Experience using social media platforms such as LinkedIn, Instagram, and Facebook, and the ability to manage APO NT’s public presence across these platforms. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build and maintain relationships across a diverse network of Aboriginal organisations, government agencies, NGOs, and elected officials. Ability to quickly understand issues and think strategically to develop innovative responses and work collaboratively with stakeholders. Satisfactory Criminal History Check and current Ochre Care (or ability to obtain). Knowledge of the National Partnership Agreement on Closing the Gap, and an understanding of policies and processes of government as they relate to Aboriginal people in the NT. Tertiary qualification in communications, public relations, journalism, or a related field.
