Aboriginal Health Practitioner Class 3 - Remuneration Package Range $116,106 – $127,512 (including salary $102,893 - $113,001)Mental Health Alcohol and Other Drugs, Central Australia Region Alice Springs Ongoing vacancy An opportunity exists for an Aboriginal Health Practitioner 3 with Mental Health Alcohol and Other Drugs, Central Australia Region. This position will provide clinical services in the Mental Health Inpatient Unit (MHU) and is based at the Alice Springs Hospital (ASH). As a member of a multidisciplinary team, the Aboriginal Health Practitioner will assist to ensure that care is provided in a culturally safe and effective manner through assessment, care planning, and treatment of clients with acute mental illness while promoting health and well-being. The position provides cultural support and advice to health professionals to build cultural responsiveness and competence. The Aboriginal Health Practitioner will require the ability to engage with community members to strengthen community involvement in health service delivery. The Aboriginal Health Practitioner 3 is an experienced and proficient practitioner who understands the health system and organization; and has the ability to provide comprehensive Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care Practice. ASH is a major referral and teaching hospital for Central Australia, serving a population of more than 42,000 people in the area exceeding 1,000,000 square kilometers, covering more than 60 percent of the Northern Territory and extending into the bordering areas of South Australia and Western Australia. ASH has more than 65,000 admissions annually and, with almost 84 percent of patients being Aboriginal, it cares for some of the nation’s most vulnerable people, with high levels of morbidity and mortality, and many conditions rarely seen elsewhere in the country. Consequently, Aboriginal languages and communication skills are an essential component of service delivery. More than 100 Aboriginal languages and dialects are spoken in the Northern Territory. The name of Alice Springs in the local language is Mparntwe and the local language group is Arrernte. The Central Australia region is steeped in the traditions and beliefs of its traditional custodians. Approximately 43 percent of the people who live in Central Australia are Aboriginal. The lifestyle is laid back with an emphasis on outdoor activities and the arts. Throughout the year there are many major events in Central Australia. Spectacular national parks and landmarks surround Alice Springs. Further afield are the tourism hubs of Uluru (Ayers Rock) and Watarrka (Kings Canyon).
