Job Description

Purpose of the Role The Engagement and Participation Officer will co-design and manage flagship programs with children and young people, including the South Australia Student Representative Council (SA SRC), Hub, and the Commissioner’s Advisory Council (CAC). These programs value and respect children and young people’s contributions and create a platform for continuous, representative and meaningful engagement.The Engagement and Participation Officer is responsible for working directly with young people to develop, coordinate and deliver strategies, campaigns and projects identified as priorities by the CCYP. The role will support young people to influence decision makers to implement changes to positively impact on children and young people’s rights, interests and wellbeing.The Engagement and Participation Officer will support government, private sector, community and other stakeholders to put in place strategies to build children and young people’s participation on decisions that affect their lives and embed cultures and systems that support child-centred thinking to enhance the outcomes of children and young people.Role Responsibilities And Key Outcomes Co-design and manage flagship programs with children and young people that value and respect their contributions:Support children and young people participate in the SA SRC, Hub, and CAC programs to meet the objectives and outcomes of the CCYP. Develop and maintain strategies and mechanisms of communication across the state in a planned and sustainable way, including information sharing, meetings, forums, and workshops. Lead on, and facilitate the involvement of young people in, campaigns to deliver innovative and inclusive actions. Work directly with young people to increase the advocacy capacity of young people, and ensure young people are heard on issues that matter to them. Embed cultures and systems that support child-centred thinking to enhance the outcomes of children and young people:Support organisational and government services to instil child-centred thinking into their work and policies. Work collaboratively with colleagues, partners and stakeholders to advocate for the rights and interests of children and young people. Actively promote the participation of children and young people in decisions that affect their lives. Requirements Key Capabilities Direct experience working with children and young people. Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally with stakeholders at various levels, including children and young people, and proven skills in developing and maintaining effective networks. Understanding of systemic advocacy and how to translate this into practical action. Ability to work in a highly effective manner, under limited direction and meet critical deadlines. Ability to respond to changes in external environments and circumstances. Awareness of, and sensitivity to, the political, social, environmental and economic environments which impact South Australian children and young people. An understanding of practical and theoretical approaches to youth participation and knowledge of the role of CCYP and the Children and Young People (Oversight and Advocacy Bodies) Act 2016.
