What skills do I need to work in mental health? You will need your core nursing skills of planning and providing appropriate and timely care, observation, collaborating with the RN, the consumer, and the team, ensuring confidentiality, dignity, and respect. Enjoy promoting consumers’ independence and engagement in meaningful activity. Be compassionate and empathic towards people in distress. Be interested in people from all walks of life and have a non-judgmental attitude. Have great interpersonal skills including active listening. Have the ability to remain calm and use de-escalation skills. What can the Statewide Mental Health Service offer? Registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia as an Enrolled Nurse (holds a Board-approved qualification in administration of medicines). The Head of the State Service has determined that the person nominated for this position is to satisfy a pre-employment check before taking up the appointment, promotion, or transfer. The following checks are to be conducted: Conviction check in the following areas:Crimes of violence; Sex-related offences; Serious drug offences; Crimes involving dishonesty. Identification check.
