About the Role We are looking for a Field Project Manager to work on-site in Torquay on a short-term contract of approximately 6 months for the Victoria component of the SMAP submarine cable build. Reporting to the Head of PMO, this role is vital in ensuring the project runs smoothly, ongoing compliance with WH&S regulations while maintaining the integrity of our telecommunications network. You will play a critical role in identifying, reporting and mitigating all project risks, improving operational efficiency, and ensuring the network aligns with industry standards. As the key person in the field, you will provide essential project reports, including safety and comprehensive project updates for HDD, Fronthaul, Backhaul and lead the Cable Landing Station in Torquay. You will be a valuable member of our PMO Team, your updates and safety oversight will be crucial in meeting immediate operational needs, such as safety and contractor compliance, while ensuring the overall success of the project. This role blends project management, and field safety reporting, directly supporting day-to-day operations and ensuring efficiency, regulatory compliance and long-term infrastructure reliability and reputation. Given the scope of your role, you will be expected to work outside of your normal business hours from time to time to perform the requirements of your role. Outside of your normal business hours, you will be expected to monitor, read and respond to contact from both internal and external stakeholders, and be available to handle job-related activities and emergencies, as required. Key Responsibilities Provide project oversight and manage all on-site field requirements including running all onsite contractor meetings Lead and project manage the Cable Landing Station in Torquay Act as the eyes and ears on the ground, identifying issues and providing regular updates and reports on general project progress to the project management team. Identify potential project risks and develop proactive mitigation strategies as required Represent Soda and SUBCO to a high standard across all key stakeholders which may include contractors, council and local community members, addressing concerns and fostering positive relationships. Perform onsite safety surveys to ensure compliance with Australian OH&S/WHS regulations and identify potential hazards. Inspect and audit network installations, equipment, and infrastructure for compliance with industry standards. Investigate safety incidents or near misses, document findings, and recommend corrective actions. Evaluate job sites for safety risks and ensure proper safety measures are in place and adhered to by subcontractors. Prepare and submit detailed safety and technical audit reports, documenting findings and corrective actions. Verify workmanship, check material quality, and ensure compliance with Australian Standards, including inspections of conduit depth, pit alignment, cable management, and site restoration. Work closely with project managers, engineers, and field teams to address safety concerns and technical issues, engage with local stakeholders, and manage complaints. Recommend improvements to safety processes and network quality based on audit findings and industry best practices. About You 5+ years’ experience in a field services or project management role (telecommunications or civil construction) Strong Project Management and organisational skills Strong understanding of civil construction processes and methodologies Experience in Telecommunications Infrastructure Builds including Sub-Sea and Fibre Operations (preferred, not essential) A solid understanding of terrestrial telecommunication infrastructure, including fibre optic networks, underground conduit, distribution points, and base stations (preferred, not essential) Previous experience in installing and/or auditing telecommunications network installations, including underground conduit, pits, and cabling (preferred, not essential) Understanding of contractor relationships with a proven ability to provide clear project updates and progress reports to stakeholders. Excellent communication skills for reporting safety protocols and engaging with communication members and other stakeholders. Ability to deliver safety training and toolbox talks to ensure team compliance. WHS training and certifications, with practical experience in safety compliance. Familiarity with the Telecommunications Act 1997 and ACMA regulations. Holds Essential Certifications such as First Aid Training, Construction Induction Certification, Implement Traffic Management and Basic Asbestos Awareness Training within Victoria. Currently holding certifications in Project Management, Telecommunications Infrastructure and or Civil Engineering/Construction (preferred) Must hold a Valid Drivers Licence (Class C) Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills to address safety and technical issues. Proficiency in project management software and tools is essential.
