Job Description

Learning Assistant (Learning Enhancement) Saint Stephen's College invites applications from experienced and dedicated Learning Assistants. We are looking to fill a permanent, part time, term time position. The Learning Assistant will work from 8.20 am to 3.05pm each day, term time. About the Role Learning Assistants at Saint Stephen’s College work cooperatively with Teachers under their guidance, to deliver a high-quality educational program, from planning, implementation through to assessment. Their main focus is to continuously seek to maximise the learning outcomes for students through assisting the classroom teacher. Learning Assistants work mostly in classroom settings but they also play a key role while students are in the library, at sports and music events, during College celebrations, competitions, excursions and during everyday activities including morning tea and lunch. This role works within the Learning Enhancement Department working with students on a personalised level and encourages students to reach their personal best. You will be responsible for assisting the Learning Enhancement Teachers and broader primary and secondary teachers to work with all students including those with special needs and learning difficulties across the College. Duties include but are not limited to: Implement specialised learning programs with small groups of students who require support in numeracy, literacy and social skills. Support individual students who need additional assistance to achieve learning outcomes during class time. Use discretion and be aware of sensitivities to assist students with their behaviour regulation. Use carefully developed knowledge and skills of various curriculum areas to provide scaffolding and differentiation for students with varying abilities, backgrounds and diagnoses. Work co-operatively with the classroom teacher and Learning Enhancement teacher(s) to ensure continuity of a student’s Individual Education Plan (IEP) making sure reasonable adjustments and learning strategies are implemented. Assist with setting up and supervising exams and providing specialised considerations such as extra time, acting as a reader or scribe for students when required. Teamwork and Communication Demonstrate a willingness to work positively within a team as well as having the ability to work independently. Demonstrate and practice effective written, verbal and non-verbal communication. Excellent personal organisation, planning and time management skills including the ability to prioritise tasks to meet deadlines. Genuine commitment to the ideals of independent schools, including the preparedness to attend extracurricular activities, as appropriate to the role. Commitment to work within and support the Christian ethos, mission and values of the College. Demonstrate passion, energy, enthusiasm and commitment towards the role and the College. Ability to work harmoniously to achieve an organisation-wide vision, as set by the College leadership and Board. Minimum Qualifications: A Certificate III in Education Support or equivalent. Current Working with Children Check / Blue Card. Demonstrated experience working with junior or high school aged students. Demonstrated experience in learning support or special needs. Experienced in implementing specialised learning programs, as required. Proven working knowledge of Word, Excel and Publisher. Skilled in the preparation of teaching aids and resources. Ability to work in close collaboration with teachers and other members of staff. Mandatory Clearances/Certifications Blue Card, in accordance with ‘No Card, No Start law’, as per the Working with Children (Risk Management and Screening) Act 2000.
