Reporting to the Director Policy and Advocacy, the Policy and Advocacy Officer is an exciting role with YWCA Canberra, suitable for a values driven candidate who enjoys policy work that has real impact in the community. The role will contribute to the organisation’s advocacy and policy profile, identify and contribute to campaigns and policy work that positively impacts on the lives of women and girls in Canberra. This role also contributes to special projects and relevant policy events such as YWCA Canberra’s Our Lives Survey, our International Women’s Day event and 16 Day of Activism content. The successful person for this role will have: Experience in policy work and advocacy in the social sector. A strong understanding of the ACT Legislative Assembly and awareness of current political developments in Canberra. Project management skills with the capacity to multitask, meet deadlines and work under pressure. Experience in advocacy strategy development, including campaign planning, community engagement, and government relations. Capacity to develop a breadth of policy knowledge across YWCA Canberra’s service areas. Demonstrated verbal and interpersonal skills, including the ability to work with a diverse range of people. Strong research and analytical skills, with the ability to interpret data, prepare reports, and use evidence to inform policy positions. Capacity for stakeholder management skills, including the potential to work with senior leaders and stakeholders. Strategic thinking skills, including the ability to critically analyse and problem-solve. A deep passion for social media as a powerful advocacy tool, with a keen eye for innovation and its potential to drive meaningful change. Media and public relations skills, including writing media releases, op-eds, and engaging with journalists to amplify advocacy efforts. A strong understanding of gender equality, intersectionality, and social justice frameworks, with a commitment to embedding these in policy and advocacy work. Who are we looking for? Tertiary qualifications in Economics or Political Science or Social Sciences or currently completing degree with relevant experience in the social sector in the advocacy and policy area. You will also bring: Well-developed written communication skills, including the ability to write persuasively for different projects, submissions and campaigns. A strong understanding of policy submissions and government relations, including responding to government inquiries and preparing evidence-based submissions. Strong work ethic, self-motivation, and an outcomes focused approach. An innovative, collaborative, and creative approach to work. A team-oriented attitude and a can-do approach.
