Phlebotomy staff are responsible for the collection of high quality and cost-effective specimens to clients of Pathology Queensland. A phlebotomist is part of a specialised team within the Cairns Group of Laboratories, comprising the Cairns Group Laboratory, and supporting district Laboratories at Thursday Island, Atherton and Innisfail, which is highly motivated, dynamic and committed to excellent client services and care of Queensland Health patients. It is anticipated that members of the Cairns Phlebotomy team will have a primary work location at the Cairns Hospital, however movement between sites located at Thursday Island, Atherton and Innisfail may be required to provide short periods of relief to assist with service provision during leave and will be undertaken with appropriate training/consultation. Your key responsibilities Adhere to defined service quality standards, health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces. Collection of appropriate quality blood and non-blood specimens from clients of Pathology Queensland as per documented protocols. Ensure correct patient identification, labelling and collecting techniques are followed according to documented policies and procedures. Proven ability to manage time effectively. Ability to work in a digital hospital environment using computer-based collection systems. Liaise with patients, medical and non-medical staff to ensure correct collection of specimens and efficient operation of the Specimen Collection Department. Perform operational duties which include restocking pathology consumables, maintaining clean work areas and assisting where the Collection Service Manager or the Phlebotomy Supervisor directs. Maintain professional attitude and behaviour when dealing with staff and clients. Participate in relevant ongoing training education with other laboratory departments and assist in staff training. Work with integrity, comply with expected ethical and behavioural standards, respect patient's confidentiality and know the importance of patient information. Comply with National Association of Testing Authority/International Standardisation Organisation (NATA/ISO) accreditation/certification requirements including performing quality control procedures, assisting with preparation of procedure manuals and completion of relevant statistics. Comply with and utilise procedures, policies, regulations, and standards which impact upon the position including Queensland Health Code of Conduct, contemporary human resource management requirements and practices, such as workplace health and safety, equal employment opportunity and anti-discrimination policy. Key competencies (role specific criteria) Demonstrated experience or ability to acquire experience in the correct procedures of specimen collection/phlebotomy including the application of established policies and guidelines with minimal supervision. Demonstrated knowledge or the ability to acquire knowledge of the importance of standard precautions in dealing with patients and biological specimens. Proven ability to follow instructions and work conscientiously and accurately with minimal supervision after careful instruction. Well-developed interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively and work productively in a team environment. Positive focus upon patient care within a hospital health care environment. Ability to function as a team member to achieve organisational goals with a well-developed knowledge of principles of effective team functioning. Demonstrate a high level of commitment to the principles of quality management and continuous quality improvement. Ability to actively participate in a working environment supporting quality human resource management practices including employment equity, anti-discrimination, occupational health and safety and ethical environment.
