Policy Adviser, Small Business and Skills Position Title: Policy Adviser, Small Business and Skills Reports to: Director -Skills, Employment and Small Business Travel required: As required (infrequent) Hours: Full time. About the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry The Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) is the nation's peak council of business organisations and the authoritative voice of Australian business. As Australia's largest and most representative business association, the Australian Chamber speaks at a national and international level on behalf of the nation's peak State and Territory Chambers of Commerce and Industry and National Industry Associations from all sectors of the economy. About the Position The position is part of ACCI’s policy and advocacy team. With an understanding of policy development and research, the Policy Adviser will play a role in shaping ACCI’s policy agenda under the guidance of the Director of Small Business and Skills. The adviser will be responsible for research, stakeholder engagement, policy development, and committee coordination, with a particular focus on small business, skills, and employment-related policies. Key Responsibilities Conduct research and analysis of complex public policy issues, including data evaluation, to prepare submissions, briefings, policy papers, articles, and other written material. Proficiency in quantitative analysis is preferred. Monitor and respond to ACCI member enquiries and ensure members gain value through involvement in policy. Monitor news and other sources to develop and identify opportunities for ACCI to position itself as a key influencer. Develop and maintain networks with ACCI members, policy makers, and other relevant stakeholders including political offices and departmental representatives. In collaboration with the Director, develop and communicate ACCI policy in committees, forums, meetings, and public presentations, as required. Act as the Secretariat for the ACCI Small Business Committee and ACCI Employment and Skills Committee, responsible for preparing agenda papers and minutes for these Committees in collaboration with the Director. Skills required: Strong analytical skills with the ability to assess economic, labour market, and public policy data to inform recommendations. Demonstrated ability to interpret legislation, policy documents, and industry reports, drawing key insights for advocacy efforts. Capacity to evaluate policy issues and anticipate implications for businesses and industry. Excellent research and writing skills, with the ability to craft well-structured, evidence-based policy documents tailored for different audiences. Strong relationship-building and stakeholder engagement skills, particularly with government officials, policymakers, and ACCI members. Ability to confidently represent ACCI in public forums, stakeholder meetings, and committee discussions. High level of organization and attention to detail, particularly in managing policy documentation, committee agendas, and meeting minutes. Proactive and self-motivated, with the ability to work independently and in a small team environment. Strong time management skills, with the ability to balance multiple deadlines and priorities effectively. Experience preferred: Two to three years’ experience in policy research, analysis, and advocacy. Proven experience drafting policy papers, submissions, and briefings that are persuasive and evidence-based. Knowledge of Australian policy areas relevant to small business, education and training, migration, or employment services. Understanding of government decision-making processes and industry trends to position ACCI as a key influencer. Experience engaging with policymakers and political representatives to advance policy priorities.
