Job Description

Job no: 515565Work type: Fixed term - Full-timeCampus: AdelaideCategories: Level A, Faculty of Sciences, Engineering and Technology (Level A) $95,053 - $105,611 per annum plus an employer contribution of 17% superannuation applies. Fixed term, full-time position for 3 years. Scaled physical models provide powerful tools for multiscale 4D analysis of complex geological processes from the formation and evolution of fault and fracture systems to crustal-to-lithospheric scale deformation responsible for the formation of sedimentary basins and mountain belts. This 3-year, full-time postdoctoral research associate position will play an integral role in establishing and supervising a new cutting-edge laboratory focused on developing innovative physical models of subsurface deformation and fluid flow, designing and executing experiments that will contribute to national energy security, emissions reduction and future fuels research priorities. The PDRA will integrate experimental results from 2D and 3D crustal deformation rigs (recorded by high-resolution digital photography, laser scanning and digital image correlation) with numerical modelling to help reduce structural and geomechanical uncertainties associated with subsurface H2 and CO2 storage in complex geological settings. Key foci of the experimental research program that the PDRA will undertake include: identifying secure sites for subsurface H2 and CO2 injection and storage in basins with complex, multiphase deformation histories; constraining the role of mechanical stratigraphy in the multiscale evolution of fault and fracture systems that can influence subsurface flow during H2 and CO2 storage; and developing new concepts for the mechanics and evolution of salt structures to inform designs of storage sites for underground H2 and CO2 storage. To be successful you will need: A completed or nearly completed PhD in structural geology, tectonics, rock mechanics and/or experimental modelling of geological processes. An established record of scientific achievements in structural geology and tectonics, including publications in international peer reviewed journals. Demonstrated knowledge and outstanding interdisciplinary research skills in relation to upper crustal deformation processes, including fault properties and dynamics. Experience of working in a laboratory setting including the design and oversight of experimental research activities, specifically physical modelling of subsurface processes. Strong interpersonal and communication skills with demonstrated ability to work both as an independent researcher and as a member of a diverse research team, collaborating toward goals, solving problems, developing scientific ideas and communicating research output through presentations and technical publications. This position requires a valid Working with Children Check.
