Principal Electrical Engineer – Primary Electrical Systems Wolff Engineering and Design specialises in the design, construction, and maintenance of electrical, telecommunications, and renewable infrastructure. About the role: The Principal Electrical Engineer – Primary Electrical Systems is responsible for leading the design, development, and implementation of high-voltage and medium-voltage electrical systems. This role involves providing technical expertise, overseeing complex design and construct projects, and ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulations. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in power system design, analysis, and implementation and have proven experience in client facing technical roles. A key part to this role will be to mentor and develop engineers within the Electrical Engineering discipline, along with leading the development and delivery of processes, procedures and templates to improve the efficiency and quality of engineering output. You will also be responsible for reviewing engineering deliverables and providing technical authority sign off, and being project lead when required. Key Responsibilities: Lead the design, development, and optimization of primary electrical systems, including high-voltage substations, switchgear, transformers, and distribution networks Provide technical leadership in electrical system design, ensuring safety, reliability, and efficiency Conduct power system studies, including load flow analysis, short-circuit analysis, and protective device coordination Develop technical specifications, design documentation, and project reports Ensure compliance with national and international electrical codes, standards, and regulations Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including mechanical, civil, and software engineers, to achieve project objectives Mentor and guide junior engineers and technical staff Lead risk assessments and failure mode analysis for electrical systems Manage stakeholder relationships, including clients, vendors, and regulatory agencies Support the commissioning, testing, and troubleshooting of electrical systems Stay updated with emerging technologies and advancements in power system engineering. Qualifications & Skills: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field 10+ years of experience in designing and managing primary electrical systems Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) and Registered Professional Engineer of Queensland (RPEQ) Expertise in high-voltage and medium-voltage power system design and analysis Proficiency in power system modelling tools such as DigSilent PowerFactory, SKM PowerTools, ETAP, EMTP-RV, CymCap, ELEK, or similar software Working Experience in using PSCAD, PSS/E Strong knowledge of industry standards, including IEEE, IEC, and NEC Strong knowledge of Australian Electrical Design Standards, such as AS 2067 (Substations and High Voltage Installations), AS/NZS 7000 (Overhead Line Design), and AS/NZS 3000 (Wiring Rules) Experience carrying out designs for one or more Transmission and Distribution Utility companies in the relevant state (eg Powerlink, Transgrid, Ergon, Energex, Essential Energy) Evidence of a high level of ability in the preparation and review of engineering designs to all applicable client, legislative and standard requirements. Excellent problem-solving and decision-making abilities Strong leadership and project management skills Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and manage multiple projects simultaneously Excellent communication and presentation skills. Work Environment & Physical Requirements: Office-based with occasional site visits Flexible working options Travel may be required to project sites and client locations Ability to work in high-voltage environments with appropriate safety precautions.
