Position Number: 0065041Location: ParkvilleRole type: Full-time; Fixed-term for 18 monthsFaculty: Engineering and Information TechnologySchool: Computing and Information SystemsSalary: Academic Level A – $83,468 - $113,262 p.a. plus 17% super About the Role The University of Melbourne’s School of Computing and Information Systems is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to contribute to the AI Reliability project, focusing on improving the robustness and performance of machine learning models in real-world deployments. In collaboration with the Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG), this role will advance research on addressing distribution shifts and out-of-distribution scenarios, ensuring AI systems remain accurate and trustworthy in dynamic environments. The successful candidate will lead independent research, publish in top-tier venues, and engage with a vibrant research community while gaining hands-on experience with real-world AI applications. Your responsibilities will include: Independently plan and carry out research on the nominated research project and work towards completion of the aims of the project. Perform data and microstructure analysis, and be responsible for qualitative and statistical analysis of research data and to communicate this information to the Chief Investigators and collaborators. Regularly write technical reports on the outputs of the experiments conducted, and maintain accurate and detailed records of all experiments conducted. Participate in preparation of manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals. Who We Are Looking For The successful candidate will be a highly analytical and innovative researcher with strong problem-solving skills and the ability to communicate complex concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences. They will demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills, a proactive and independent work ethic, and the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders while managing multiple research priorities. You will also have: A PhD in Machine Learning (especially robust and adversarial machine learning), or closely related discipline. A record of quality research as evidenced by publications in leading journals and at conferences commensurate with opportunity. Excellent ability in ML algorithm design, theoretical analysis of ML techniques, empirical evaluation of ML methods, problem solving and maintaining accurate research records. Capability for innovative research, as evidenced by scholarly publication. This role requires that the successful candidate must undergo and maintain an up-to-date Working with Children Check. This is essential to guarantee a secure environment for all individuals at the University.
