About Your Role This predominantly clinical position involves working within the Suicide Prevention Team including SPOT (Suicide Prevention Outreach Team) and Safe Haven services. Working within a small team of peer workers and clinicians, the Suicide Prevention Team aim for a ‘no wrong door’ approach to ensure people have access to the support they need in a warm and welcoming, non-threatening environment. Clinicians working in the Suicide Prevention service will deliver support that aligns with the principles of step up/step down care. This includes making referrals/links to a range of community-based services for ongoing support (step down), or escalating concerns over consumer wellbeing to relevant clinical services for follow up (step up). It will also include health promotion activities. Team members will be rostered to both SPOT or Safe Haven services dependent on availability and service need. The service currently operates 5 days a week from Thursday to Monday from 1:30PM-10:00PM with the potential of moving to a 7 day service. After hours, evenings and weekend work will be a requirement of the role. The SPOT is a virtual outreach service providing afterhours care and follow-up to people experiencing or recovering from suicidal distress. The service works from a ‘buddy’ approach where clinicians and peer workers work together, collaboratively with the consumer, to respond to suicidal crisis. Using virtual technology, the SPOT clinician and peer worker provide evidence-based, recovery-oriented care for people in suicidal crisis, including crisis response, psychosocial support, assessment, safety planning, assertive follow up, recovery/wellness planning, advocacy, and identification of community supports. SPOT staff may be involved in contact with community groups and service awareness raising activities to promote ‘case finding’ as part of the service. For many people experiencing a suicidal crisis, emergency departments (ED) are often the only and most immediately accessed form of support. However, they are not ideal locations for people experiencing psychological distress. The Safe Haven is a walk-in service that provides an alternative to visiting an ED or remaining in ED unnecessarily. Peer workers with lived experience provide compassionate, immediate, supportive, and welcoming responses for people experiencing suicidal crisis. Information about and links to community-based services such as housing, relationship counselling or financial assistance are provided to help alleviate distress. Clinicians are available as required to provide support to peer workers, therapeutic assessment for guests, evidence-based treatments and brief, limited care coordination.
